Full Job Description

Must-Have Open/Flexible Availability

The employee is cross-trained in all aspects of this department. Dispatchers work with call takers to ensure that calls are inputted correctly and assigned to the closest available unit. This process involves customer service, professionalism, time management, multitasking, and organizational skills.

An employee in this position works closely with the DispatchManager and/or Supervisor to make sure all calls are taken effectively and units are running efficiently. The employee works with the Field Supervisor to make sure units are available and run calls in a timely manner. Employees will learn the computer system used to run the ambulances and non-medical units. They will also become familiar with many health insurance. This position is evaluated by the employees’ ability to perform effectively assigned tasks. The employee shall be an individual that is highly motivated and very competent in his/her abilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Prioritize phone calls from the urgent line (NICU, Hospitals, HCFR, and TFR)

Answer phones in a professional and confident manner

Verbalize to units all call information, making sure they repeat back call information to verify pick up and drop off

Takes calls efficiently with specific attention to detail

Monitor AmeriCare and Emergency Dispatch Center (EDC) radio communications

Monitors Verizon PTT phones for communication from crews and supervisor

Use Right CAS system to show units en-route, on-scene, transporting, destination, available, en-route to post and at post

Utilize Fleeteyes to verify unit locations throughout shift

Inform dispatch supervisor of crew issues/complaints

Relay all updated TFR, HCFR, other agency information to crews

Verify crews have picked up the necessary paperwork prior to transport for Hillsborough County and prior to availability for Polk County

Inputs all information received via fax to Right CAD

Verify all insurances, obtain authorizations as needed

Gate keepers are to know where units are at all times

Go through calls from the previous day, check insurance and verify call information prior to being coded or verified

Cancel will-calls from previous day

Keep PCS hold and PCS attachment hold up to date, fax PCS over to hospitals and facilities, and send certified mail

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Basic knowledge of EMS system

Considerable knowledge of all service areas

Basic computer knowledge

Ability to learn and have a high competency level in AmeriCare’s computer software for dispatch

The ability to read a map, use mapping systems for all areas

Insurance knowledge & Ability to multitask and organize information

Ability to take constructive criticism in a professional manner

Maintain information given verbally or written, examples; contract rates, contracted facilities, changes in rules/protocols, etc.

Ability to communicate effectively, written and verbal

The ability to handle multiple tasks in an effective and efficient manner

Knowledge of hospital specialties such as Trauma Centers, Stroke and Heart Centers, and pediatric Centers

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND REQUIREMENTS

High school graduation or GED equivalent

One year minimum experience in EMS or medical field.
