Health Commissioner
Pickaway County Public Health | Circleville, Ohio
Full-Time | Executive Leadership
Lead the Future of Public Health in Pickaway County
Pickaway County Public Health (PCPH) is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and forward-thinking leader to serve as its next Health Commissioner.
Public health is about more than programs and policies—it's about people, partnerships, problem-solving, and creating meaningful change. The Health Commissioner works closely with the Pickaway County Board of Health, agency leadership and staff, community partners, local officials, and state agencies to guide the future of public health in Pickaway County.
We're looking for a confident and approachable leader who communicates openly, builds strong relationships, thinks strategically, and isn't afraid to stay connected to the day-to-day work of the agency when needed.
And because it's public health, no two days are exactly the same.
What You'll Do
- Lead, support, and develop a talented team of public health professionals.
- Partner with the Board of Health to translate strategic priorities into measurable action.
- Oversee agency operations, programs, finances, grants, partnerships, and long-term sustainability.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with healthcare providers, schools, community organizations, local governments, elected officials, and state partners.
- Foster a workplace culture grounded in communication, accountability, teamwork, inclusion, and professional growth.
- Lead strategic planning, quality improvement, performance management, and PHAB accreditation efforts.
- Advocate for local public health and serve as a trusted, visible voice in the community.
- Direct the agency's response to public health emergencies and unexpected community needs.
The Must-Have Qualifications
Because the Health Commissioner is a statutory position, candidates must meet specific qualifications established by Ohio law.
Per Ohio Revised Code 3709.11, the person appointed as Health Commissioner must be:
- A licensed physician, dentist, veterinarian, podiatrist, or chiropractor; OR
- The holder of a Master's degree in Public Health (MPH) or an equivalent Master's degree in a related health field, as determined by the Board of Health of a general health district.
Candidates must also have:
- Seven (7) years of professional public health experience, including at least four (4) years of administrative or supervisory experience in governmental public health.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- The ability to work effectively with employees, the Board of Health, government officials, community partners, and the public.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to meet agency requirements for job-related travel.
Applicants must meet one of the statutory qualification pathways above to be appointed to this position.
