Full Job Description

At the Baltimore Washington Eye Center, we provide excellent patient care through quality ophthalmology services. These services include laser cataract surgery, advanced technology lens implants (IOL), refractive surgery, corneal surgery, the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and dry eye, as well as eye exams for cataracts, eyeglasses and contact lenses.

Core Responsibilities:

To assist the physician directly by performing the administrative tasks and technical functions delegated by the physician to allow for comprehensive professional diagnosis, increased patient confidence and complete patient understanding of all treatment(s) rendered.

Ensure complete entry of all pertinent data from the physician’s exam into the electronic medical records (EMR), using only standard approved abbreviations.
Correctly billing and coding the exam as directed by the physician.
Prepare prescriptions indicated during an examination for the physician’s signature at the conclusion of the examination.
Through the EMR system, generate acknowledgment letters back to referring doctors and generate patient letters to primary care physicians to keep them updated on the ocular health of their patients who have systemic diseases with common ocular complications.
Confirm patient’s understanding of appropriate next steps per the physician
Promptly complete billing information on the route ticket and in EMR for services rendered.
Set up instrument trays with the appropriate medications and supplies, and assist for minor surgical procedures as indicated.
Take whatever steps necessary to ensure security of medications, forms and/or other instrumentation.
Assist in noting sample drugs in the drug IOS when applicable.
Coordinate referrals and insurance information for patients as needed to allow an uninterrupted clinic flow.
Coordinates with the leadership, as needed, to ensure efficient patient flow.
Perform OCT, fundus photos, HVFs, IOL measurements and Lipiscan as directed by the doctor and supervisor.

Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma required

One year of ophthalmology experience is preferred, but not required

Prior scribe experience is preferred, but not required

OSC preferred, but not required

Additionally, the candidate should possess the following qualities and or skills:

thorough and accurate data collection and entry in a timely manner
ability to work individually and in a team environment
willing to learn new skills to improve clinic flow and as a team member
outgoing, motivated and friendly
strong computer and organizational skills
excellent attention to detail
knowledge of medical terminology
excellent written and verbal communication skills:
