JOB DESCRIPTION:
Do you live for color, folds, rubber bands, dye bottles, and that ridiculous little dopamine hit of opening up a finished tie dye piece?
The Clay Hole, Utah’s largest community art studio and creative hub, is expanding its workshop lineup beyond pottery. We’re on a mission to offer fun, creative, memory-making art experiences for our community, and we want a tie dye instructor who seriously knows their stuff.
We are looking for an experienced, high-energy tie dye artist to lead a hands-on workshop sometime between Labor Day and Christmas.
This is not for someone who has “done tie dye before.”
We want someone who lives, breathes, experiments with, teaches, studies, and gets genuinely excited about all the wild things tie dye can do. Someone who knows more than just spirals. Someone who can walk into a room full of beginners and help them leave with pieces they are genuinely proud to wear, gift, or show off.
HOW THIS WORKS (REVENUE & RESPONSIBILITIES):
You’ll co-create the workshop with Dan Pearce, artist, studio owner, and content creator with 3M+ followers
Dan’s team handles all registration, emails, logistics, venue setup, and marketing
You handle the tie dye instruction, dyes, chemicals, bottles, gloves, rubber bands, plastic bags, bins, table protection, rinsing/prep guidance, aftercare instructions, and cleanup
Participants will bring their own items to dye, such as shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, pillowcases, baby clothes, aprons, socks, or other dye-friendly fabric items
The Clay Hole will not be supplying shirts or clothing items
You’ll need to provide clear instructions in advance about what types of fabric work best, what participants should bring, and anything they should avoid
We split the total workshop revenue 60/40, where you receive 40%.
With 28 to 48 students depending on the weekend, this is a high-earning opportunity
Multi-day or multi-session formats are welcome, especially if they allow for more advanced techniques, batching, curing, rinsing, or finishing
THE IDEAL INSTRUCTOR:
You are colorful, organized, confident, wildly creative, and genuinely good at helping beginners feel capable fast. Ideally, you:
Have taught tie dye workshops before, or have serious experience creating high-quality tie dye work
Know how to teach multiple popular tie dye patterns and styles, including several of the following:
Classic spirals
Crumple dye
Bullseye patterns
Stripes
Accordion folds
Mandala-style folds
Geode-inspired tie dye
Ice dye
Reverse tie dye
Bleach dye techniques
Scrunch dye
Heart patterns
Fan folds
Incline dyeing
Color splits and gradients
Layered color effects
Are comfortable explaining the difference between fiber-reactive dyes, fabric types, soda ash, curing time, rinsing, washing, and colorfastness
Know how to help complete beginners get great results without making the process feel overwhelming
Can manage a group, keep the energy fun, and still keep the process organized and safe
Can bring strong sample work to inspire attendees and show what is possible
Have a photo portfolio, Instagram, website, or other examples of your work
Have references, past workshop experience, or testimonials available if possible
ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS:
Workshop must be fully doable at tables in a group studio setting
You must provide all tie dye supplies except for the clothing or fabric items participants bring themselves
You must be extremely organized with dyes, liquids, chemicals, setup, cleanup, and participant instructions
You’ll need to arrive early and stay late for setup and cleanup
You’ll need to protect tables, floors, sinks, and shared studio spaces from dye damage
You’ll need to provide clear take-home instructions so participants know how long to let items sit, when to rinse, how to wash, and how to avoid ruining their results
You’ll visit The Clay Hole before the event to film a promotional video with Dan, shared by both parties
If you have social media reach, you’re expected to help promote the workshop
Canceling, except in a documented emergency, after registration opens incurs a 50% registration revenue penalty

Excited to brainstorm workshop formats, add-ons, and upgrades, such as take-home dye kits, extra dyeable items, advanced pattern options, or private group workshops
Flexible with scheduling, since we’re coordinating many creative workshops
Comfortable working with a big, energetic, community-based studio
Able to balance fun chaos with actual structure
