Purpose of Position
The purpose of this position is to support the mission of the Presbyterian Home for Children by providing exceptional service, professionalism, and compassionate care in all aspects of the role. The successful candidate will contribute to a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment while working collaboratively with residents, students, families, volunteers, coworkers, and community partners to help transform lives through hope, healing, and opportunity.

The Presbyterian Home for Children Lawncare and Maintenance Worker plays a critical role in supporting the organization’s mission by maintaining the health, appearance, and safety of the organization's lawns and landscaped areas as well as providing maintenance.
To be a successful Lawncare and Maintenance Worker, you must be willing, and become able to do the following always:
- Reflect on the vision and mission of the Presbyterian Home for Children.
- Work with the Manager and the Supervisor of Facilities and Maintenance to perform different tasks to achieve a functional and pleasant outdoor environment.
- Perform the essential job functions as described in the task list from the Operations Departmental Manual;
- Work with fellow staff to provide positive outcomes on projects and tasks.
- Function within the Presbyterian Home for Children policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee’s Guide to Successful Employment with PHFC.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
- Able to operate a variety of equipment and tools.
- Able to lift 40-45 pounds.
- Enjoy working outdoors in a variety of temperatures.
- Extensive periods of sitting, standing, and bending down during shift.
- Good time management and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Having an eye for detail.
- Highly motivated and demonstrating excellent physical dexterity.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- A willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
- A team player with the ability to work independently.
- Ability to offer excellent customer service.
- Must be able to pass a CAN check and ABI/FBI background check through the Department of Human Resources.
- Must be able to pass a physical and TB test.
- Must have a valid Alabama driver’s license.
- Eligible to be covered by the Presbyterian Home for Children's auto insurance.
To be a successful in the role of Lawncare and Maintenance Worker, you must be willing and able to do the following task list:
- Lawn Care and Landscaping:
- Mow, edge, trim, and water lawns and other grassy areas regularly.
- Plant, fertilize, aerate, and reseed lawns as needed to maintain a healthy, vibrant appearance.
- Apply eco-friendly weed control and pest management practices to ensure lawn health.
- Assist in seasonal landscaping tasks, such as leaf removal, winterization, and preparing flowerbeds for planting.
- Grounds Maintenance and Clean-Up:
- Remove debris, litter, and other waste from lawns, flowerbeds, and other outdoor areas to keep the grounds clean and welcoming.
- Maintain walkways, driveways, and surrounding outdoor areas by sweeping, raking, and clearing any obstructions.
- Participate in seasonal maintenance tasks, including snow removal or ice treatment in winter if applicable.
- Maintenance and Equipment Management:
- Operate and perform routine maintenance on lawn equipment such as mowers, edgers, trimmers, and leaf blowers.
- Inspect, clean, and report any equipment issues or necessary repairs to the Supervisor of Maintenance and Facilities.
- Maintain an organized and clean storage area for lawn maintenance tools and materials.
- Support Environmental and Community Initiatives:
- Use eco-friendly lawn care products and practices to minimize environmental impact.
- Support composting, recycling, or other green initiatives promoted by the organization.
- Assist with volunteer-led community beautification projects or events on the grounds, as needed.
5. Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to safety guidelines and organization policies to ensure a safe work environment.
- Identify and report any potential hazards on the property that could impact visitor safety.
- Ensure all equipment is safely stored and maintained according to organization standards.
6. Routine Maintenance and Repairs:
- Perform basic repairs to plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems, or coordinate with contractors when needed.
- Handle minor carpentry tasks, including repairing doors, windows, and furniture.
- Conduct routine inspections of facilities to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, or potential issues.
7. Building and Facility Upkeep:
- Ensure common areas, restrooms, and office spaces are clean and organized.
- Replace light bulbs, air filters, and other consumable items as necessary.
- Monitor and restock cleaning and maintenance supplies as needed.
8. Preventive Maintenance:
- Conduct regular checks on building systems (e.g., heating, cooling, plumbing) and address issues proactively to prevent breakdowns.
- Maintain records of maintenance activities and report any major repair needs to the Supervisor of Facilities and Maintenance.
9. Event and Program Support:
- Set up, arrange, and take down tables, chairs, and equipment for events or programs as needed.
- Assist with moving or installing fixtures, equipment, and furniture to support program requirements.
- Support any special facility needs during large events, including troubleshooting and on-site maintenance.
10. Health and Safety Compliance:
- Follow all safety protocols to protect staff, visitors, and yourself while performing duties.
- Report any safety or security issues to the Supervisor of Facilities and Maintenance immediately.
- Ensure compliance with organizational guidelines for the safe use and storage of cleaning chemicals, tools, and other maintenance materials.
