SUMMARY AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Obtain blood samples and prepare them for analysis and distribution
Instruct patients in appropriate specimen collection procedures
Determine appropriate tubes, sample types, and collection timing for the various laboratory tests.
Responsible for receiving specimens from in-house and off-site clinics/agencies and determine their acceptability for testing.
Navigate and research orders in Cerner, modify orders, and transmit orders to Cerner efficiently and accurately.
Accurate and timely accessioning of patient and testing information into the laboratory information system (LIS) and initial troubleshooting of problems.
Responsible for the general cleanliness and appearance of the phlebotomy area of the laboratory. Tasks involve organizing or removing clutter and related duties.

Responsibilities:

DxA 5000 Fit & Track System

Management of input/output for patient samples
Troubleshooting
Distribute non-automated specimens to appropriate departments
Maintain specimen storage according to CAP Standards
Maintenance of all components (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Bi-annually)

Input-Output Drawers
Robotics

Track system

Outpatient/Inpatient Services
- Perform phlebotomy services in order to obtain blood specimens for laboratory testing
- Collection of MRSA swabs for pre-operative testing
- Manage patient flow for outpatient lab
- Answer and triage incoming telephone calls
- Review orders for accuracy, diagnosis codes, electronic signature
- Resolve any discrepancies with patient orders
- Scheduling patients for timed Glucose Tolerance Testing

Point-of-Care Testing
- Performs point-of-care patient testing (POCT)
- Maintains POCT analytical equipment
  - Quality Control
  - Patient Data
Standing Orders
- Responsible for creating and maintaining patient standing order spreadsheet
- Monitor expiration dates of orders
- Request updated orders from patient providers
PKU
- Monitoring test card stock
- Preparing and Processing PKU for UPS pick-up

Reference Laboratory Testing
- Ordering
- Aliquoting Specimens to be distributed to correct reference laboratory
- Transport Logs
- Courier coordination
- Managing and ordering reference testing supplies

Maintains supply stock for in-house phlebotomy, specimen collection and general laboratory needs
- Performs weekly inventory
- Places orders through Premier Materials Management
- Rotation of stock to ensure supplies are utilized prior to expiration date
Manages and performs off-site draws when needed
- Lafayette Center

- Home draws

Communicate with physicians, hospital and laboratory staff, and other area hospitals, with regard to specimen collection, processing, and patient results
Acts as a liaison between laboratory services and other hospital services, striving to maintain good working relations with all hospital services in order to further the goals of the hospital.
Pathology Coordinator
- Cross-train in processing pathology specimen
- Prepare specimens for transport to reference lab
- Assist on-site Pathologist in pathology grossing room
- Provide coverage in department when needed
Initiates needed research for discrepancies in processing area and resolves with corrective action

REPORTS TO: Administrative Director of Laboratory Services

SUPERVISES: None

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS:

Hospital staff, Physicians and Physician offices, Reference Laboratories

QUALIFICATIONS:

Meticulous in transcribing data to computer, able to follow established protocols to ensure correct identity throughout all processes
Ability to multitask
Professional appearance
Familiarity with ICD-10 codes
General knowledge of laboratory tests, TAT, special requirements and availability of reference laboratory testing
Ability to discern and effectively give attention to detail
Requires strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Excellent typing skills required for computer data entry
Excellent organizational skills, and client relation/interpersonal skills

Experience/Specialized Skills:

Minimum of one year post high school training in health related field
Minimum of one year phlebotomy experience required

Required Education/Course(s)/Training:

High School Diploma

Preferred Certification/Registration:

ASCP, Registered Phlebotomist Technician

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
Good manual dexterity. Able to stand at least 50% of the workday.
Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Essential functions include activities in which individual must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to patients, physicians, families and other employees accurately, loudly or quickly.
Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discrimination in sound.

Visual acuity sufficient for work that deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, computer terminal and extensive reading.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Clinical laboratory: Constant exposure to blood-borne pathogens, infectious agents, patient rooms, nursing homes, and emergency areas.
