Purpose: To assist ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions. Duties include full -patient work-up; which include, taking patient medical histories/chief complaints, measuring visual acuity, eye pressure, instilling eye medication, and conducting diagnostic tests, as ordered by the ophthalmologist.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Interviews and records patients’ chief complaint and medical histories
- Prepares patients for examination or treatment by the physician
- Enters patients’ medical information into the patient’s electronic medical record

Performs technical work ups and diagnostic testing including conducting topography, OCT and visual field tests, etc.

Transcribes physician’s examination data into patient’s electronic medical record

Instills eye medications, as ordered by the physician

Communicates with patients about their prescriptions, follow-up care, procedures, symptoms, physician generated instructions and/or pre/post-operative status

Prepares treatment rooms for patient exams, keeping the rooms clean, neat, and stocked

Maintains and sterilizes medical equipment, instruments, and facilities

Performs administrative duties such as answering phones, sending correspondence to pharmacies or other authorized parties, maintaining an inventory of supplies

Follows applicable policies and procedures and takes precautions to establish a safe work environment

Maintains strict patient protocols in accordance with practice policies/ HIPAA requirements

Maintains a high level of professionalism with patients, providers, and staff
- Performs other duties as assigned and works overtime as necessary
Requirements:
-
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate/Bachelor’s degree preferred
-
Experience: 1-3 years of related medical assistant, and/or optometry/ophthalmic or clinic experience required

Experience with checking intraocular pressure and refraction, a plus
-
Using a computer; EMR software experience and Microsoft Office experience required

Language: Ability to read, write, and communicate in English; Bilingual in Spanish, a plus

Strong knowledge of medical terminology, basic math and science, detailed oriented charting

License/Certification: Valid COA, COT, or Ophthalmic Scribe Certified preferred

Must be able to travel between Lakewood and Los Alamitos office, work overtime, as needed

Work is performed in a clinical setting. Clinic attire required, such as scrubs, closed toe shoes, maintaining professional grooming standard required.
- Must be able to stand or walk for up to 8 hours with bending, stooping, squatting, sitting, twisting, and reaching. Including ability to frequently reach with hands and arms, and repeat the same movements.

Reports to: Clinic Supervisor/Clinical Operations Manager
Pay Range: $23 -$25 (per hour)
Shift: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM -5:00 PM (Hours may vary pending clinic/doctor schedule)
