Communication Construction & Engineering (CC&E), a local underground utility contractor, is hiring an Underground Utility Locator to join our team in Denver, CO.
This position is responsible for locating and marking underground utilities for 811 damage prevention tickets, private utility locates, and CC&E construction projects. The Underground Utility Locator uses electronic locating equipment, maps, utility records, and field software to accurately identify underground facilities and help prevent utility damage.
Our utility locators typically work independently in the field but are part of a larger locating and damage prevention team. This position requires a self-starter who can manage their own daily workload, prioritize tickets, and make good decisions without constant supervision. Work assignments, ticket completion, documentation, and performance are tracked through the software and systems used by the locating team.
Previous utility locating experience is preferred but not required. Paid training is available for the right candidate.
Most work is in the Denver metro area and across the Front Range. This position involves significant daily driving between locate sites. Occasional travel throughout Colorado may be required.
Schedule
Monday through Friday
Typical work week: 40 to 50 hours
Participation in an on-call rotation is required
Must be available for emergency damage prevention response after hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays when on call
Pay
$22.00 to $32.00 per hour based on experience

Responsibilities
- Respond to assigned 811 locate tickets and complete locates within required timeframes
- Perform private utility locates for CC&E projects and customers
- Locate and accurately mark underground fiber optic, electrical, conduit, and other utility infrastructure
- Use electronic utility locating equipment to identify underground facilities
- Use computers, tablets, mobile applications, mapping systems, ticket management software, and other field technology
- Read utility maps, construction plans, as-builts, GIS information, and other facility records
- Identify handholes, manholes, pedestals, vaults, tracer wires, building entrances, and other utility access points
- Apply appropriate paint, flags, and markings and accurately document completed locates
- Communicate with excavators, contractors, customers, inspectors, construction crews, and other CC&E locators as needed
- Coordinate with the locating team on ticket coverage, priorities, complex locates, and emergency requests
- Identify facilities that cannot be confidently located and communicate conflicts or missing information
- Respond promptly to emergency locate requests, utility damages, and other damage prevention situations when on call
- Assist with utility damage investigations and field documentation
- Safely operate and maintain an assigned company vehicle
- Maintain locating equipment, tools, supplies, and other assigned equipment
- Plan daily routes, prioritize tickets, and manage assigned work efficiently
- Maintain timely and accurate ticket updates, documentation, and records in company systems
Accurate locating and documentation are critical responsibilities of this position. Locators are expected to take ownership of their assigned work and manage their day without constant supervision while remaining part of the larger CC&E locating team. When a facility cannot be confidently located or a situation presents a risk to existing infrastructure, the Locator is expected to communicate the issue and involve other team members as needed.
Requirements
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
- No DUI or DWAI convictions within the past 5 years
- Employment is subject to a background check and motor vehicle record check
- Self-starter with the ability to manage daily workload and responsibilities without constant supervision
- Comfortable working in a position where assignments, documentation, ticket completion, and performance are tracked through company software
- Comfortable using computers, tablets, mobile applications, mapping systems, and other field technology
- Ability and willingness to learn new software, locating equipment, and utility locating techniques
- Ability to read and understand maps, plans, drawings, and utility records
- Strong attention to detail and ability to make good decisions in the field
- Ability to manage time, plan routes, and prioritize multiple tickets and changing priorities
- Ability to participate in an on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergencies
- Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, snow, and other weather conditions
- Ability to walk jobsites and uneven terrain, bend, kneel, and perform physical field work throughout the day
- Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds as required
- Able to communicate effectively in English with contractors, customers, coworkers, inspectors, and the public
- Professional and presentable when representing the company

Preferred Experience
Experience in one or more of the following is preferred, but not required:
- Utility locating or 811 damage prevention
- Private utility locating
- Underground utility or construction experience
- Fiber optic, telecommunications, or electrical infrastructure
- Electronic utility locating equipment
- GIS, mapping systems, construction plans, or as-builts
Bilingual English and Spanish is a plus, but is not required.
Paid Training & Growth
Paid training will be provided on utility locating, CC&E systems and procedures, locating equipment, software, and our infrastructure.
Strong performers will have opportunities to learn more advanced locating, damage prevention, mapping, and underground utility construction and take on additional responsibility within the company.
