Job Overview

We are seeking highly skilled and motivated Licensed Stationary Engineers to support hospital central plant and facility operations at acute care medical facilities in various locations.

This role involves ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of essential mechanical and utility systems within a healthcare environment. Engineers must be capable of working variable shifts to meet the demanding needs of hospital operations while maintaining strict compliance, safety, and documentation standards.

Assignments are scheduled based on hospital coverage needs. Hours may vary from week to week, however engineers should be open to working full schedules when needed, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

This is a good fit for engineers who want flexible work, per diem assignments, or additional hours, and who are comfortable working in hospital or large facility environments.

The ideal candidate will hold a valid Stationary Engineer or Boiler Operator license and have experience operating complex mechanical systems in hospital or large facility environments.

Pay -

Rates vary based on hospital requirements, license level, shift, experience, and availability. Not all assignments pay at the top of the range. Differentials apply in most instances.

Systems may include:

High pressure steam boilers
HVAC and chilled water systems
Cooling towers and pumps
Emergency generators
Air compressors
Medical gas and vacuum systems
Building automation systems
Industrial mechanical equipment

Your expertise will help create a safe and reliable environment for patients, staff, and visitors while ensuring all systems remain in compliance with safety regulations, hospital policies, and accreditation standards.

Duties

Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on mechanical and utility systems
Operate, monitor, and maintain hospital central plant equipment
Maintain boilers up to 500 HP or unlimited capacity depending on facility
Monitor chillers, cooling towers, pumps, compressors, and HVAC systems
Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and system diagrams
Respond to alarms, equipment failures, and emergency conditions
Maintain accurate plant logs, shift reports, and maintenance records
Assist with boiler feedwater systems and chemical treatment monitoring
Support emergency power systems including generators and transfer switches
Work around medical gas, vacuum, and compressed air systems safely
Follow lockout tagout, confined space, and safety procedures
Coordinate work with hospital staff and contractors
Maintain clean and safe plant and mechanical areas

Qualifications

Required

Valid Stationary Engineer or Boiler Operator license
500 HP, 1st Grade, or Unlimited accepted depending on facility
License must be current and active

Preferred experience

Hospital or central plant operations
Large facility or industrial plant maintenance
High pressure steam systems
Chilled water systems
Cooling towers
Emergency generators

Preventive maintenance programs
Utility shutdown procedures
Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting

Knowledge of the following is a plus

CMS or DNV standards
State boiler regulations

Hospital documentation requirements

Ability to work independently
Strong communication skills
Professional demeanor in hospital environment
Reliable and punctual
Able to pass background check and drug screen if required
Able to complete hospital onboarding requirements

Schedule

Variable schedule based on hospital needs
Shifts may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays
Some weeks may be full time hours, other weeks may be lighter
Engineers must be able to work scheduled shifts once assigned
Must be open to working up to 40 hours per week when needed

This is not a guaranteed full-time position but availability for full schedules is required when coverage is needed.

San Fernando Valley
Orange County

Work is performed on site at hospital facilities.
