Full Job Description

Purpose:

As a Fitter you will be responsible for assembling and fitting miscellaneous steel components according to technical drawings and blueprints, ensuring that they meet design specifications and quality standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

Verify conformance of work pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
Weld steel members.
Move steel members into positions, manually or with hoists or cranes.
Position, align, fit, and track weld parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
Determine appropriate method and sequence of tasks in order to fabricate items in the most efficient way possible.
Coaching and training of lower-level fitters to help them advance in their skill sets.
Assisting foreman and managers maintain consistent workflow and production on shop floor to ensure timely completion of projects.
Ensure all peers are following all safety policies.
Conduct thorough quality checks to identify and rectify defects, ensuring that the finished product meets quality standards.

Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities, and Competencies:

Fitter 1:

Basic Metalworking Skills:
- Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and basic metalworking machinery.
- Basic understanding of fabrication processes such as cutting, grinding, and drilling.
Blueprint Reading:
- Ability to interpret simple technical drawings and blueprints.
Welding Proficiency:
- Advanced skills in welding, including the ability to perform intricate welding tasks using various techniques.

Safety Awareness:
- Adherence to safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a secure working environment.
Team Collaboration:
- Willingness to work as part of a team and follow instructions from experienced fitters and supervisors.
Attention to Detail:
- Developing a keen eye for detail to ensure accuracy in the fabrication process.
Physical Endurance:
- Ability to handle physically demanding tasks and work in various positions.
Learning Attitude:
- Openness to learning and acquiring new skills on the job.

Fitter II:

Advanced Metalworking Skills:
- Proficiency in using a broader range of fabrication tools, machinery, and equipment.
- Capability to perform more complex fabrication processes and tasks.
Blueprint Interpretation:
- Advanced ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings and blueprints.
Welding Proficiency:
- Advanced skills in welding, including the ability to perform intricate welding tasks using various techniques.
Quality Control:
- Strong focus on quality assurance, with the ability to identify and rectify defects or deviations from specifications.
Problem-Solving:
- Developing advanced problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues that may arise during the fabrication process.

- Ability to coordinate and manage specific aspects of fabrication projects, working more independently.

- Demonstrating potential for leadership roles and the ability to assist in guiding and mentoring junior fitters.

Fitter III:

Expert Metalworking Skills:

- Expertise in reading and interpreting complex technical drawings and blueprints.

Welding Expertise:
- Advanced skills in welding, with the ability to perform intricate welding tasks using various techniques.
Quality Assurance:
- Strong focus on quality assurance, overseeing the entire fabrication process and ensuring the highest standards are met.
Leadership and Supervision:
- Strong leadership skills to oversee and manage a team of fitters, providing guidance, training, and coordinating work schedules.
Project Management:
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, ensuring deadlines are met and resources are utilized efficiently.
Communication Skills:
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with other team members, engineers, and project managers.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
- Proactive in suggesting and implementing improvements to enhance efficiency and quality in the fabrication process.
Training and Mentorship:
- Willingness and ability to train and mentor junior fitters, sharing knowledge and expertise.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical or vocational training is a plus.
Two years experience in steel fabrication or welding.

Upon offer or promotion, candidate must pass a drug and/or alcohol test.
