SUMMARY: The Deputy Coroner position serves as a liaison between the Coroner, law enforcement and the crime lab, focusing on examining the remains of a body in order to determine both how and why a death occurred, to include but not limited to identification of the body, photographing the crime scene, notification of the next of kin and transportation of the body to the crime lab.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Assist County Coroner in determining the manner and cause of death, whether natural or violent, as well as to identify the remains
- Conduct investigative work at the death scene and may include interpretation of autopsy results
- Assist the coroner in an investigation by speaking to witnesses, gathering information such as phone numbers, names and addresses, secure potential evidence or administer first aid if necessary
- Prepare necessary forms including the decedent death certificate and any additional state or local forms required
- Interviewing victims, witnesses, and law enforcement officers to gather information and facts on assigned criminal cases
- May be called to testify in trial proceedings
- Consult with State Crime Lab personnel to evaluate test findings and results
- Preparing reports and summary case work for Coroner’s Office
- Conducting special investigations at the direction of the Coroner or his / her designee
- Operating a county vehicle in conducting county-related business
- Other duties may be assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Bachelor's or master's degree in anthropology, criminal justice or forensic anthropology preferred
- A minimum of two years work experience in death scene investigation
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Individuals must meet all eligibility requirements established by the Coroner’s Office for promotion to this classification.
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be a citizen of the United States or legally qualified to work in the United States
- Must have no record of any felony conviction
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR)
- Ability to complete and pass the Georgia Basic Coroners Course
- Ability to obtain certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI)
- At least 1000 hours of death scene experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of general law enforcement practices; federal, state, and local criminal, traffic, and juvenile laws and legal procedures; and the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the County and Coroner’s office.
- Knowledge of or the ability to learn the geography of the county and the location of important buildings and areas
- Knowledge of law enforcement and criminal investigation procedures, practices and operations
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of assigned county vehicle and equipment

- Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing
