Job Summary

The Tennessee College of Applied Technology Knoxville is seeking a dedicated, full-time Associate Instructor of Patient Care Technology / Medical Assisting to join our team.

As an Associate Instructor, you will play an essential role in preparing compassionate, competent graduates who go on to serve patients and families in hospitals, long-term care facilities, physicians’ offices, clinics, and other healthcare settings throughout East Tennessee. In this role, you will deliver high-quality instruction that fosters student learning and cultivates a positive, professional learning environment. You will guide students through classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences — including areas such as nursing assisting, phlebotomy, electrocardiography (EKG), anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology — ensuring that every learner receives the support and encouragement needed to thrive and earn the credentials that launch their careers.
This is a full-time, twelve-month position working 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., with a thirty-minute lunch. Travel to clinical sites and other TCAT Knoxville campuses may be required. Job Duties
Instruction & Student Learning
- Teach all aspects of the Patient Care Technology / Medical Assisting curriculum in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings, including anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, phlebotomy, electrocardiography (EKG), medical math, and related topics.
- Develop, coordinate, and supervise students’ clinical rotations.
- Select and apply the instructional methods best suited to students’ needs, interests, and abilities.
- Monitor, evaluate, and grade individual student progress, and provide academic advising and support.
- Maintain confidential, accurate, and complete student records, both on paper and electronically - (Essential)
Program Coordination & Development
- Participate in the ongoing development and improvement of the program.
- Select texts, equipment, supplies, and other learning resources, and maintain current, accurate course syllabi.
- Establish and maintain an active program advisory committee.
- Complete required reports, including accreditation and program reports, accurately and in a timely manner. - (Essential)
Recruitment, Placement & Community Engagement
- Assist with the recruitment of students and the placement and follow-up of graduates.
- Promote the College and the Patient Care Technology / Medical Assisting program within the community.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with business, industry, and clinical partners. - (Essential)
Professional Development
- Remain current in the healthcare field and in instructional methods and technologies.
- Attend scheduled college and division professional development and in-service activities.

Service to the College & Community
- Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with FERPA and all applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
- Participate in accreditation, institutional assessment, and performance-funding processes.
- Attend convocation, commencement exercises, and mandatory college programs. • Develop and maintain positive, cooperative relationships with colleagues across all TCAT Knoxville campuses.

Minimum Qualifications
- Current, active licensure in the State of Tennessee as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
- A minimum of three (3) years of recent clinical experience as an RN or LPN within the past five (5) years.
- The knowledge, experience, and certifications necessary to provide instruction in areas such as nursing assisting (CNA), phlebotomy, electrocardiography (EKG), CPR and first aid, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and medical records.
- Willingness and ability to meet all requirements established by clinical sites in order to supervise students (clinical-site requirements are subject to change at the discretion of each site).
- Computer proficiency and the ability to adapt quickly to new technology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- A minimum of two (2) years of long-term care experience.
- Prior teaching experience, or demonstrated evidence of the ability to teach.
- Current CPR and first aid instructor certification.
- Knowledge of Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) policies and procedures.

- A commitment to remaining current in the healthcare profession and to ongoing professional growth.
- Proficiency with current instructional and office technology, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Microsoft Teams, along with the ability to learn Ellucian Banner and the College’s learning management system (LMS) and student information systems.
- Ability to maintain confidential, accurate, and complete records — both paper and electronic — and to complete required reports in a timely manner.
- Ability to meet and maintain the health, screening, and certification requirements of assigned clinical sites.
- Ability to handle confidential student records judiciously and in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Physical Demands / Working Conditions
The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Environment: Work is performed in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings with frequent interruptions, and may include assignments at off-site clinical locations and travel to other TCAT Knoxville campuses. Approximately 30 hours per week are spent in direct instruction and training, with the remaining 7.5 hours used for grading, recordkeeping, lesson preparation, and individual student meetings.
- Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in classroom, laboratory, and clinical health-care settings; to stand or sit for prolonged periods; to move about in order to demonstrate procedures and assist students; and to communicate effectively to exchange information.
Salary
Commensurate with education and experience, in accordance with Tennessee Board of Regents guidelines, within the range of $51,149 - $61,379.
Applicants for this Associate Instructor position may be considered for hire at the Instructor rank if they meet the qualifying criteria for that rank, including three (3) years of full-time higher education teaching experience in the occupational discipline and required work experience and education. Final rank placement will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications at the time of hire.
