What is a Transport Nurse?
The Transport Nurse is an experienced, highly skilled, professional nurse who is responsible for stabilizing and transporting critically ill or injured patients for Lurie Children’s Hospital.
In the world of Transport Nursing there is no such thing as normal. Every day is new and exciting, and emergencies can arise at the drop of a hat. This position is face paced and challenging and transport nurses work anywhere from ambulances and helicopters to emergency rooms and spend much of their time in the field.

What does training look like for a Transport Nurse?
At Lurie’s we are committed to hiring and growing the best RNs as members of our Transport Team.

You will be given access to:

A detailed 6-month orientation pathway individualized to each team member.
Involvement in Core Days every other month. This continuous learning and structured educational opportunity will include simulation, case reviews, and team building to strengthen clinical and professional skills.
Yearly safety days geared towards enhancing group dynamics and ensuring safe air and ground transport environment. Curriculum topics for these days include aviation & ground training, crew resource management, and safety training.

What are the requirements to become a Transport Nurse?

Current, active licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Illinois, in good standing. BSN preferred, ASN considered if willing to return for BSN within 2 years of hire.
Three years of (pediatric preferred) or (neonatal preferred) critical care experience. Equivalent experience may be considered if transferable.
Basic Life Support Certification through AHA required.
PALS/NRP/ACLS/TNCC required in the first year of hire.
Required to pass their neonatal exam in the first year of hire.
Must be able to carry 40 pounds at a time, with frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds.
Requires good overall physical health and body agility to enter/exit ambulance.
