Full Job Description

Position Summary:

To provide divisional leadership and onsite oversight across all Grace plumbing projects, including coordinating Grace self-perform crews, subcontractors, materials, and equipment, ensuring that plans, specifications, and applicable plumbing codes are strictly followed, and that work is proceeding on schedule and within budget. The Plumbing General Superintendent is ultimately responsible for the manpower, scheduling, inspections, quality control, productivity, and job site safety of every plumbing scope executed by Grace.

Principal Responsibilities:

Leadership: Acts a leader with respect to the project. Takes the initiative to understand and resolve any problem or obstacle that presents itself through the course of the project. Actively follows up on all team members to ensure that project goals are aligned, obtainable, and are being met. Applies the principle of “thinking outside the box” to foresee challenges that are yet to come and develop a method to address them.

Relationship Building: Develops lasting relationships with the Owner, design team members, consultants, contractors, trade partners, vendors, etc. This is done by building trust and confidence with team members and acting with integrity.

Team Oriented: Understands that our trade partners are team members and assumes the role of a “coach” to ensure that each player is operating at their best and organizes the jobsite and schedule so that we play to team members strengths and shore up weaknesses. Looks for “out of the box” opportunities to foster the team environment.

Goal Planning: Understand the difference in short-term and long-term project goals. Works alongside the project team to define long-term goals as well as short-term goals for the next 30 days, 60 days, and 90 days. Works alongside the Project Team to ensure that defined goals are met.

Owner Advocacy: Acts on behalf of the Owner. Uses the Owner’s point of view when making decisions and ultimately ensures that the Owner’s needs are being exceeded. Maintains open and frequent communication with the Owner.

Communication: Understands that communication is the key to success. Has the ability to determine the appropriate method of communication for a given situation and applies the appropriate methods to given situations.

Collaboration: Effectively collaborates with all project team members. Provides the needed support and resources to ensure that project expectations are being met.

Specific Preconstruction Phase Activities:

Plan, Spec, Document Review: Reviews civil, architectural, structural, and MEP plans, plumbing specs, riser diagrams, and shop drawings for coordination, constructability, logistics, and sequencing- provides written comments.

Site Logistics: Develops the plumbing site logistics plan, including underground tie-ins, laydown, pipe staging, fabrication areas, hoisting, and BIM coordination. Continues to update the logistics plan as the project evolves.

Cost Estimates: Assists the estimating team in developing budgets for self-performed plumbing scope (labor, materials, equipment, prefab) and general requirements.

Project Schedule: Defines the plumbing sequencing, flow, and logic within the overall project schedule -underground, rough-in, top-out, trim-out, fixture set, and testing.

Scope Review: Reviews documents for needed plumbing scope, participates in scope review / buyout meetings, and ensures self-perform crews and trade partners understand their scope of work.

BIM / MEP Coordination: Participates in BIM coordination meetings to resolve clashes between plumbing, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and structural elements prior to installation.

Specific Construction Phase Activities:

Project Schedule: Creates, updates, and distributes weekly look-ahead schedules for plumbing scope. Identifies critical-path activities and adjusts crews/sequencing to maintain project flow.

Submittals / Shop Drawings: Assists in review and ensures crews and trade partners follow approved submittals, shop drawings, and isometric drawings.

Subcontractor Weekly Meetings & Trade Coordination Meetings: Creates agendas, hosts, and distributes notes for weekly plumbing meetings and MEP coordination meetings.

Pre-Installation Meetings: Conducts pre-installation meetings prior to underground, rough-in, top-out, and trim-out phases.

Material Delivery & Prefabrication: Oversees plumbing material delivery logs, prefab releases, long-lead items (fixtures, water heaters, pumps, specialty valves), and onsite staging.

Subcontract Agreements / Scope of Work: Reviews and understands each plumbing scope of work and ensures it is fully executed.

Trade Partner & Self-Perform Inspections: Inspects plumbing work for compliance with plans, specs, approved submittals, plumbing codes, and manufacturer recommendations. Issues and corrective actions are documented and closed out via Procore.

Mock-ups: Defines, schedules, and coordinates plumbing mock-ups (e.g., typical bath wall, riser assembly) to confirm constructability and quality standards.

3rd Party / Testing / AHJ Inspections: Oversees pressure testing, hydrostatic and air tests, backflow testing, gas line testing, and AHJ inspections. Ensures final sign-offs from all Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

Request for Information (RFIs): Prepares, sends, logs, and resolves plumbing RFIs, collaborating with the Design Team without impacting the critical path.

Safety: Ensures all plumbing work is completed safely, including hot work, confined space, trenching/excavation, and pressurized systems, through safety pre-planning, inspections, and training. Creates a positive culture of safety focused on worker protection, not just compliance.

Completion Lists: Creates, manages, and distributes plumbing completion lists to reduce the punch list effort.

Project Cost Management: Integral part of cost management- directly responsible to operate plumbing jobsite expenses within budget and assist Project Managers with forecasting costs, exposures, and labor productivity.

Specific Closeout Phase Activities:

As-Built Documentation: Responsible for preparing plumbing as-built drawings, collecting input from crews and trade partners, and providing an organized set of documents to the Owner.

Owner Onboarding: Conducts onsite Owner training for plumbing systems (shut-off locations, water heater operation, backflow, recirc systems, etc.) and coordinates seamless transition to operations.

Punch List: Responsible for final completion and sign-off of all plumbing punch list items.

Warranty Coordination: Manages plumbing warranty documentation, callbacks, and resolution with Owners during the warranty period.

Desired Qualifications of Superintendent:

10+ years of progressive plumbing field experience, with 5+ years in a supervisory role (Superintendent or higher).
Strong working knowledge of the International Plumbing Code (IPC), Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), and applicable local/state plumbing codes.
Experience with commercial, hospitality, healthcare, and/or multi-family plumbing scopes.
Must be able to read and understand plans, specifications, isometric drawings, and shop drawings.
Proficiency with Procore, Bluebeam, and Microsoft 365.
OSHA 30 certification (preferred); backflow certification a plus.
Strong leadership, mentoring, and communication skills.
Available for travel and/or relocation between Grace jobsites.
