Construction Contracts – Project Management
Senior Associate / Project Manager
Location: Chicago, IL or Denver, CO preferred
Schedule: Primarily Onsite
Type: 6-Month Contract-to-Hire
Industry: Renewable Energy / Large-Scale Construction
The Opportunity
A leading energy organization is expanding its Construction Contracts team and is seeking experienced professionals to support the contracting and preconstruction efforts behind a growing portfolio of large-scale energy projects.
This is a unique opportunity for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of project management, large-scale construction, technical contracts, and commercial negotiation.
Rather than managing a single construction project from start to finish, this team supports multiple projects simultaneously during the critical contracting stage, helping move major construction and EPC agreements from early planning through negotiation and execution.
The team works across a diverse portfolio of wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects. Previous renewable energy experience is not required; candidates with relevant backgrounds in power, utilities, EPC, infrastructure, oil & gas, and other large-scale industrial construction environments are encouraged to apply.
We are considering candidates at both the Senior Associate and Project Manager levels, with level determined by experience, negotiation ownership, independent decision-making, and people leadership.
What You'll Be Doing
You will help manage a portfolio of complex construction contracts and work closely with project management, engineering, procurement, safety, environmental, project controls, contractors, and other stakeholders.
Responsibilities may include:
- Manage and advance multiple large construction/EPC contracts through the contracting and negotiation process.
- Review complex contract documents, scopes of work, technical specifications, terms and conditions, exhibits, and insurance requirements.
- Participate in and/or lead negotiations directly with contractors.
- Draft, review, and redline contractual language.
- Evaluate proposed contract changes and understand their impact on project cost, schedule, execution, and overall risk.
- Work with engineering and project teams to ensure technical requirements are accurately incorporated into contracts.
- Coordinate stakeholder feedback and keep contract negotiations moving toward timely execution.
- Support decisions regarding the acceptance, rejection, or revision of proposed contract terms.
- Provide insight into contracting strategy, risk allocation, and risk mitigation.
- Maintain productive contractor relationships while navigating complex or challenging negotiations.
- Manage multiple projects, contracts, priorities, and stakeholders simultaneously.
- Contribute to broader initiatives focused on improving contract templates, scopes, specifications, exhibits, tools, and contracting processes.
- Support the development of consistent contracting practices and continuous improvement across a large project portfolio.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for professionals who combine large-scale project or construction experience with meaningful exposure to complex contract negotiations.
Strong candidates may come from project management, construction management, engineering, EPC, contracts/commercial management, preconstruction, utilities, power generation, infrastructure, oil & gas, or similar large-scale project environments.
Ideal experience includes:
- 5+ years of experience in project management, construction, engineering, contracting, or a related area supporting large-scale projects.
- Experience reviewing, drafting, redlining, and/or negotiating complex construction or technical contracts.
- Strong understanding of how contract language impacts real-world project execution and risk.
- Experience working with scopes of work, technical/engineering specifications, exhibits, and other construction contract documentation.
- Familiarity with contract concepts such as risk allocation, indemnification, force majeure, insurance requirements, scope responsibility, and change management.
- Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, construction, project management, procurement, legal/commercial, and contractor teams.
- Ability to manage multiple complex priorities and contracts simultaneously.
- Strong communication, negotiation, stakeholder-management, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to remain composed and solutions-oriented during difficult negotiations while maintaining productive contractor relationships.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, legal studies, or another relevant technical/business discipline.
· Experience developing and executing EPC contracts is highly desirable.
· Experience in renewable energy or power generation is beneficial but not required.
Leveling
Candidates may be considered at either the Senior Associate or Project Manager level based on experience.
Senior Associate
Senior Associate-level professionals will be meaningfully involved throughout the contracting process, including contract analysis, technical coordination, risk identification, redlining, and negotiations.
This level is a strong fit for someone who can independently analyze issues, gather input from technical and project stakeholders, and develop recommendations, while escalating certain final contractual decisions to senior team members.
Direct people-management experience is not required.
Project Manager
Project Manager-level professionals will take greater independent ownership of their contract portfolio and negotiations.
This level is intended for candidates who have personally led complex negotiations, exercised independent judgment regarding contractual terms, and made decisions about what should be accepted, rejected, revised, or escalated.
Project Manager-level candidates should also bring people-leadership experience, including experience managing, coaching, and developing team members.
What Will Make You Stand Out
We're particularly interested in candidates who can point to specific examples where they:
- Personally negotiated a major construction, EPC, or technical contract.
- Identified a contractual risk and determined how to address it.
- Challenged or revised a contractor's proposed terms.
- Connected contractual language to its impact on construction, engineering, cost, schedule, or project risk.
- Worked directly with technical scopes and engineering specifications rather than solely administering contracts.
- Successfully navigated a difficult negotiation while preserving the long-term contractor relationship.
- Managed several large contracts or projects simultaneously.
- Led and developed junior team members or direct reports.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
- Work across a broad portfolio of wind, solar, and battery storage projects.
- Gain exposure to multiple major projects instead of being limited to a single project or technology.
- Play a meaningful role in negotiations and decisions surrounding complex construction contracts.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across engineering, construction, procurement, project management, and other areas of the business.
- Help shape and improve contracting standards, templates, specifications, and processes.
- Join a growing organization investing heavily in large-scale energy infrastructure.
- Opportunity for long-term conversion following the initial consulting engagement.
Candidates with strong large-scale construction and contract experience are encouraged to apply even without previous renewable energy experience.
