Finance & Accounting Intern

Organization Description

20 hours a week for 9 weeks

Primary Function of the Position

The Finance and Accounting Intern will support the Finance team with general accounting processes such as the cash and accounts payable processes. This role offers hands-on exposure to grant accounting, fund tracking, and financial stewardship in a mission-driven organization. Must be a Ramsey County resident.

Position Responsibilities

Record cash receipts on a weekly basis
Prepare cash reconciliations at month end
Assist with vendor invoice processing on a weekly basis.
Assist with cost allocation preparation at month end.
Record general journal entries as assigned by Finance Team members.
Perform other special projects as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Currently pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
Basic understanding of accounting principles; interest in nonprofit and grant accounting preferred
Strong attention to detail and ability to track expenses per funding stream
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with accounting or grants management software a plus
Ability to manage confidential financial data with integrity
Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Skills

Coursework or experience related to nonprofit accounting or grants management
Familiarity with restricted funds, cost allocation, and compliance requirements
Interest in working with government/private grants and complex reporting structure

Education and Experience

High School Diploma
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Experience working in diverse or immigrant/refugee communities preferred.

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for sustained periods of time in an indoor setting

Ability to tolerate moderate noise levels (i.e. shared open office space with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic).

Must have the ability to move about the office to access files and office equipment.

Must have access to reliable transportation for occasional travel for meetings at other HAP office locations, events, and off-site meetings.

Occasional moving or lifting up to 20 pounds in general and in emergency situations may lift children up to 60 pounds.

Able to focus on data, analyze the information, and draw conclusions.

Frequent interactions with coworkers and participants require the ability to communicate effectively.

Frequent communication via email requires the ability to fluently read and write in English.
