Full Job Description

Position Summary:

The Retail Pharmacy Clerk supports daily operations of the outpatient pharmacy by assisting customers, processing transactions, and maintaining an organized, welcoming retail environment. This role greets customers, directs inquiries, and enters required information into pharmacy systems to help ensure efficient patient flow and timely service. Working closely with pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, the Retail Pharmacy Clerk supports smooth workflow through routine restocking, upkeep of the over-the-counter (OTC) area, and reliable clerical assistance. This position functions within a collaborative, service-oriented team environment and contributes to a positive customer experience through attention to detail, professionalism, and adherence to confidentiality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Greet customers, assist with general inquiries, and help manage the flow of patients at the pharmacy counter to support efficient service.
Operate the cash register and charge systems, ensuring accurate processing of payments, returns, and daily transaction records.
Maintain and restock the OTC area, organizing shelves, monitoring inventory levels, and ensuring products are clean, accessible, and properly labeled.
Enter customer and patient information into pharmacy computer systems with accuracy and compliance with confidentiality requirements.
Communicate effectively with pharmacy staff, providers, and customers to relay messages, answer questions, and support overall pharmacy operations.
Assist with basic clerical tasks such as filing, organizing supplies, and supporting workflow needs during high-volume periods.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

None

Educational Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent preferred

Experience Requirements:

Excellent customer service for interaction with Pharmacy personnel, medical personnel, and customers.
Previous retail experience helpful, but not required.
Previous cash register experience preferred.
Previous familiarity with computer use preferred.

Special Skills or Training Requirements:

Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from computer systems.
Ability to work a variety of shifts based on company and customer needs.
Accurately record information, orders, messages, and other related data, via telephone, written, and face to face communication.
Communicate verbally with staff and customers in a clear and concise, friendly and professional manner.
Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

Physical Requirements:

The Retail Pharmacy Clerk is frequently required to stand for extended periods while assisting customers and operating the cash register. Duties involve walking within the pharmacy, bending, reaching, and lifting light to moderate items, such as OTC products, supply boxes, or transaction materials. Adequate vision, hearing, and communication abilities are essential for accurate data entry, customer interaction, and safe operation of point-of-sale equipment.

Environmental Requirements:

Work is performed in a retail pharmacy environment with frequent interaction with customers, pharmacy staff, and medication storage areas. The role may experience moderate noise, frequent interruptions, and periods of high activity during peak service times. Adherence to safety procedures, privacy regulations, and infection-prevention practices is required to maintain a secure and compliant work setting.
