The Director of Accounting is responsible for overseeing the hospital's accounting and financial reporting functions and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information. This position provides leadership and oversight of general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial reporting, payroll coordination, budgeting, cash management, month-end and year-end closing processes, and internal financial controls.
The Director of Accounting works closely with hospital leadership, department managers, revenue cycle staff, external auditors, financial institutions, vendors, and regulatory agencies. The position plays a critical role in maintaining the financial stability and regulatory compliance of a rural hospital.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITES
Accounting & Financial Reporting
· Direct and oversee the hospital's daily accounting operations.
· Maintain accurate general ledger accounts and financial records.
· Supervise month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes.
· Prepare and review monthly financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, cash-flow reports, and departmental financial reports.
· Analyze financial results and identify significant variances, trends, and potential financial concerns.
· Ensure appropriate accounting treatment of hospital transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and applicable healthcare accounting requirements.
· Maintain accurate schedules for fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accruals, liabilities, and other balance sheet accounts.
· Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, clearing accounts, payroll accounts, and other assigned accounts.
· Ensure appropriate documentation and support for journal entries and account reconciliations.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
· Assist with preparation and monitoring of the hospital's annual operating and capital budgets.
· Work with department leaders to develop departmental budgets and monitor performance.
· Prepare budget-to-actual reports and investigate significant variances.
· Assist leadership with financial forecasting and long-term financial planning.
· Provide financial information and analysis to hospital leadership and the Board of Directors as requested.
Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable
· Oversee accounts payable processes, including invoice review, coding, approvals, and payment processing.
· Monitor accounts receivable and coordinate with Revenue Cycle leadership to identify trends affecting cash flow.
· Ensure appropriate recording and reconciliation of patient and third-party receivables.
· Review vendor statements and resolve discrepancies.
· Monitor outstanding balances and assist with cash-flow management.
Cash Management & Banking
· Monitor daily cash balances and hospital liquidity.
· Assist with cash-flow forecasting and management.
· Coordinate banking activities, deposits, transfers, and reconciliations.
· Maintain appropriate documentation and internal controls related to cash handling.
· Work with banking partners regarding accounts, services, and financial transactions.
Payroll & Benefits Accounting
· Coordinate with Human Resources to ensure accurate payroll accounting.
· Review payroll-related journal entries and reconciliations.
· Reconcile payroll liabilities, taxes, benefit deductions, and related accounts.
· Ensure payroll expenses are properly allocated to the appropriate departments and cost centers.
· Assist with annual payroll-related reporting and audits.
Audit & Regulatory Compliance
· Coordinate with external auditors during annual financial statement audits.
· Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and requested financial records.
· Assist with Medicare, Medicaid, cost reporting, and other healthcare-related financial reporting requirements as applicable.
· Maintain compliance with applicable federal and state financial regulations.
· Ensure accounting policies and procedures are documented and consistently followed.
· Support internal and external compliance reviews and audits.
Internal Controls
· Develop, implement, and monitor accounting policies and procedures.
· Maintain appropriate segregation of duties and financial controls.
· Identify potential weaknesses in accounting processes and recommend corrective actions.
· Monitor financial transactions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
· Assist with fraud prevention and financial risk management.
Rural Hospital Financial Operations
· Understand and support the unique financial challenges associated with rural hospital operations.
· Monitor financial trends related to low patient volumes, payer mix, staffing costs, contract labor, supply expenses, and other rural healthcare financial pressures.
· Assist leadership with evaluating the financial impact of service-line changes, physician arrangements, contracts, capital purchases, and operational initiatives.
· Support financial reporting associated with rural hospital programs, grants, supplemental payments, and other applicable funding sources.
· Assist with financial analysis related to maintaining essential hospital services and community healthcare access.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience.
- Healthcare or hospital accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Prior supervisory or management experience required.
- Experience with general ledger systems, financial reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, and financial analysis.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and internal controls.
- Experience with electronic accounting and/or hospital information systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Healthcare accounting or hospital finance experience.
- Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or other relevant certification preferred.
- Experience with Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement and hospital cost reporting.
- Experience with healthcare financial systems such as Meditech, Medhost, CPSI, Oracle, Sage, QuickBooks, or comparable systems.
Pay: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
