Full Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The mentor coach is responsible for providing coaching, guided reflections, training, and support to Head Start/Early Head Start classroom staff on best practices related to early learning, school readiness, teacher-interaction and supporting emotional development. The mentor coach also coordinates and facilitates group-based professional development for teachers to work collaboratively to share reflections, example practice, solve application challenges, manage conflict, and promote continuous learning and improvement in professional practice and child outcomes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Establish a mentor/protégé relationship that is confidential in nature to ensure that high levels of trust are created and maintained between education staff and mentor coach.

· Provide one-to-one mentor coaching strategies for improving teacher-child interactions and how to work with culturally, linguistically, and developmentally diverse groups of children.

Administer the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) two times a year and analyze ongoing assessment data to measure improvement in child outcomes (October and April).

· Share CLASS observations and develop a coaching action plan with teaching staff that falls below the national average.

Provide weekly constructive feedback and on-site support for teaching practices to increase teacher confidence and competence to include modeling, co-teaching, observing, and providing reading materials or other resources as needed.

Provide feedback in a supportive, instructive, and non-judgmental way, enhancing the ability of teaching staff to observe children’s activities, small groups, and experiences as part of the ongoing assessment process and to use this information to individualize the curriculum.

Plan and present individual and group workshops on relevant child development topics based on program data for the purpose of providing individualized professional development.

· Participate in program events for teachers, and teacher assistants pertaining to child development and curriculum. Some of these may include monthly teacher and assistant training, new staff orientation, and early literacy mentor coaching.

Complete weekly reports and coaching logs for assigned sites and submit them according to timelines for the purpose of meeting program requirements for tracking and observations to the HS/EHS Director.

Support teaching staff in creating developmentally appropriate learning environments, including setting up new classrooms.

· Support staff in appropriate usage of classroom environment space and equipment.

· Provide classrooms with supplies and equipment as needed.

Demonstrate and model effective classroom management skills with assigned teachers in order to provide positive ways to guide young children in the classroom.

Prepare curriculum materials and resources for classroom staff usage.

Attend professional development meetings and training sessions to provide leadership in sharing and implementation.

Maintain current First Aid and CPR Certification (training provided).

When assigned a teacher, review and critique weekly lesson plans submitted by the teacher and monitor the daily implementation of the same on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, state licensing, and agency guidelines.

Observe and support assigned teachers to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment that is age-appropriate to the developmental level of all children enrolled.

Model and/or demonstrate lesson plans and provide job embedded support at least 80% of the time.

Education and Experience:

· Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, Child Development or Elementary Education with an emphasis in early childhood.

· Minimum of 3 years of successful experience in a preschool classroom.

· Knowledgeable of Early Childhood Education and Developmentally Best Practices and innovative approaches to classroom management.

· Must have CLASS certification and maintain it throughout employment.

· Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, multi-task and is flexible.

· Effective communication (written/oral), coaching, organizational and time management, leadership, people and result oriented, critical-thinking skills, and interpersonal skills.

· Display a professional, welcoming, and approachable attitude.

· Basic computer skills including but not limited to creating documents, reports, regularly checking and responding to emails and knowledge of data analysis.

· Proficient in training based on trainees learning styles, observation, and documentation.

Ability to work cooperatively and collaborate with managers and leadership staff.
