POSITION SUMMARY
The HVAC Helper is a full-time, entry-level field position for individuals beginning a career in the commercial HVAC and mechanical trades. The HVAC Helper works under the direct supervision of Mechanical Journeymen, Sheetmetal/Ductwork Mechanics, and the Mechanical Superintendent, assisting with the installation, service, and maintenance of HVAC and mechanical systems on commercial and industrial projects. This position is designed for recent trade school graduates or candidates with limited hands-on experience who are eager to learn, work hard, and grow into a skilled mechanic.
The HVAC Helper is expected to show up on time, follow direction, work safely, and take an active role in learning the trade every day. AOTCS invests in helpers who demonstrate reliability, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn, and provides a clear path toward advancement to Apprentice, Mechanic, and Journeyman positions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESInstallation Support
- Assist mechanics and journeymen with the installation of HVAC equipment including rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, mini-splits, air handlers, exhaust fans, and related equipment.
- Assist with the installation of rectangular, round, spiral, and flexible ductwork, including carrying, staging, lifting, holding, and hanging duct sections under direction.
- Assist with installation of hangers, supports, strut, all-thread rod, curbs, and equipment pads.
- Assist with installation of refrigerant piping, condensate piping, and gas piping, including cutting, cleaning, deburring, and preparing pipe and fittings.
- Assist with installation of diffusers, grilles, registers, dampers, and other air distribution devices.
- Drill, cut, and fasten materials as directed using hand and power tools.
- Perform basic tasks independently once trained and demonstrated proficient (e.g., hanging strut and rod, insulating line sets, sealing duct, setting diffusers).
Service & Maintenance Support
- Assist technicians with preventive maintenance including filter changes, coil cleaning, belt replacement, drain line cleaning, and general equipment cleaning.
- Assist with equipment startup, testing, and troubleshooting by observing, handing tools, and recording readings as directed.
- Learn to identify HVAC components, refrigeration cycle basics, airflow principles, and common equipment problems.
- Complete basic service paperwork and job documentation as directed.
Jobsite & Material Support
- Load, unload, receive, and stage materials, tools, and equipment at the shop and on jobsites.
- Keep the work area, mechanical rooms, and gang boxes clean and organized throughout the workday.
- Sort, protect, and inventory materials; report shortages, damage, or missing items to the lead mechanic.
- Assist with equipment rigging and setting under direct supervision.
- Operate company vehicles to run for parts, materials, and deliveries when directed.
- Maintain and care for company tools and equipment; report lost or damaged tools immediately.
- Assist with jobsite cleanup, trash removal, and daily housekeeping.
Learning & Development
- Learn to read basic construction drawings, mechanical plans, and equipment installation instructions.
- Learn proper tool identification, tool use, and material handling techniques.
- Ask questions, take notes, and actively seek instruction from mechanics and journeymen.
- Participate in company training, manufacturer training, and safety training when offered.
- Work toward OSHA 10, EPA 608, and other certifications with company support.
- Demonstrate steady progress in skills, speed, and independence over time.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all OSHA, company, and customer safety requirements.
- Wear required personal protective equipment at all times (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, work boots, hearing protection, high-visibility vest as required).
- Participate in daily toolbox talks and safety meetings.
- Never operate equipment or perform a task you have not been trained and authorized to perform.
- Ask before acting when unsure — no task is worth an injury.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, near misses, and injuries immediately.
- Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of trip and fall hazards.

QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of an HVAC, mechanical, or related trade school program preferred; equivalent limited field experience or a strong desire to learn the trade will be considered.
- Basic understanding of HVAC systems, tools, and construction terminology helpful but not required.
- Ability to use basic hand and power tools or willingness to learn.
- Basic math skills (measurement, fractions, reading a tape measure).
- Strong work ethic, dependability, and willingness to take direction.
- Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
- OSHA 10 and EPA 608 certifications a plus (company will support obtaining them).
- Must pass pre-employment drug screening and background check.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including summer heat and humidity.
- Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts and work at heights.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds and handle bulky materials with assistance.
- Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, bending, climbing, reaching overhead, and lifting throughout the workday.
- Ability to work in attics, crawlspaces, ceiling plenums, rooftops, and mechanical rooms.
