Overview
POSITION SUMMARY
The Mechanical Journeyman is a skilled trades professional responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and startup of HVAC and mechanical systems on commercial and industrial projects. The Journeyman works under the direction of the Mechanical Superintendent/Foreman and is expected to perform mechanical work independently while maintaining AOTCS standards for quality, productivity, safety, and professionalism.
The Mechanical Journeyman serves as a leader within the field workforce and plays a critical role in mentoring apprentices, supporting project success, and upholding the reputation of AOTCS through exceptional workmanship and customer service.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Mechanical Installation
- Install HVAC equipment including rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, mini-splits, air handlers, exhaust fans, make-up air units, dedicated outdoor air systems, CRAC units, package units, and related equipment.
- Install ductwork systems including rectangular, spiral, double-wall, and specialty duct systems.
- Install refrigerant piping, condensate piping, gas piping, and mechanical accessories as required.
- Install supports, hangers, curbs, equipment pads, vibration isolation, and related components.
- Assist with controls installation and mechanical system integration.
- Perform equipment rigging and setting operations as directed.
- Maintain a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Service, Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot mechanical and HVAC systems.
- Diagnose equipment issues and identify corrective actions.
- Perform repairs and maintenance on mechanical equipment and systems.
- Assist with equipment startup, testing, balancing, and commissioning activities.
- Complete service-related documentation accurately and professionally.
- Identify and communicate potential system deficiencies or concerns.
Project Support
- Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, submittals, and shop drawings.
- Coordinate work activities with Superintendents, Project Managers, and other trades.
- Maintain accurate material inventories and communicate shortages.
- Assist in project punch list completion and closeout activities.
- Maintain productivity standards while ensuring quality workmanship.
- Support project schedules and milestone completion requirements.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all OSHA, company, and customer safety requirements.
- Utilize personal protective equipment properly.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas.
- Participate in toolbox talks and safety meetings.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions immediately.
- Protect company tools, equipment, and assets.
- Promote a culture of safety and accountability on every project.
APPRENTICE DEVELOPMENT & MENTORSHIP
AOTCS believes the future of the skilled trades depends on developing the next generation of professionals. Mechanical Journeymen are expected to actively participate in the success of the AOTCS YouthForce Apprenticeship Program.
- Work directly with AOTCS YouthForce Apprentices to teach trade skills, safety practices, tool identification, installation methods, and jobsite expectations.
- Serve as a positive role model through professionalism, work ethic, attitude, and craftsmanship.
- Assist the Superintendent in training and developing less experienced employees.
- Demonstrate patience and a willingness to explain mechanical concepts and installation procedures.
- Encourage apprentices to learn while maintaining safe and productive work practices.
- Help create a learning environment that supports apprentice growth and long-term success.
- Teach proper tool usage, material handling, installation techniques, and trade best practices.
- Reinforce AOTCS values and expectations through daily interactions with apprentices.
LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS
While not responsible for overall project management, Mechanical Journeymen are expected to demonstrate leadership in the field by:
- Taking ownership of assigned tasks and responsibilities.
- Supporting the Superintendent in achieving project goals.
- Assisting with crew coordination when directed.
- Leading by example in productivity, quality, safety, and professionalism.
- Helping maintain positive morale and teamwork among field personnel.
- Supporting the development of future mechanics and field leaders.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 4 years of commercial or industrial HVAC/mechanical experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, refrigeration principles, mechanical construction practices, and equipment installation.
- Experience with ductwork installation, refrigerant piping, brazing, equipment setting, and startup assistance.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- EPA 608 Certification preferred.
- OSHA 10 Certification preferred.
- Valid driver's license required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, bending, climbing, and lifting.
- Ability to work in attics, crawlspaces, rooftops, and mechanical rooms.

Pay: $20.00 - $35.00 per hour
