Full Job Description

Overview

Join our dynamic and growing clinic as a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist, where your expertise will drive the accuracy and efficiency of medical billing processes. In this vital role, you will ensure precise coding of clinical visits and diagnoses, manage insurance claims, and support the revenue cycle management to optimize financial performance. Your attention to detail and knowledge of medical coding guidelines will directly impact patient billing accuracy and compliance with healthcare regulations. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a fast-paced environment dedicated to delivering exceptional healthcare services.

Responsibilities

Accurately assign ICD-10, ICD-9, CPT, and DRG codes to medical records in accordance with current coding guidelines for inpatient and outpatient services
Review and interpret medical records, documentation, and physician notes to ensure proper coding for billing purposes
Process health insurance claims using Practice Fusion billing software and electronic health record (EHR) systems, ensuring timely submission and follow-up on unpaid or denied claims
Manage medical collections by following up on outstanding accounts and resolving billing discrepancies with third-party payers
Maintain comprehensive documentation of coding activities, claim status updates, and correspondence within EMR/EHR systems
Communicate with insurance companies and other payers regarding claim status, denials, payment issues, and required documentation
Stay current with changes in medical coding standards, insurance policies, and healthcare regulations to ensure compliance
Collaborate with healthcare providers and insurance companies to resolve billing issues efficiently
Prepare and send patient statements
Follow up on outstanding insurance and patient balances
Post electronic remittance advices (ERAs), insurance payments, adjustments, and patient payments
Respond professionally and compassionately to patient questions regarding statements, insurance processing, and account balances
Protect patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA requirements and clinic policies
Assist with accounts-receivable reporting and other billing-related projects as needed

Skills

Strong knowledge of ICD-10, ICD-9, CPT coding systems, including coding for inpatient services and DRGs
Proficiency in medical terminology, medical records management, and understanding of medical coding guidelines
Experience with billing software, EMR/EHR systems, and electronic health record management for billing and coding purposes
Familiarity with health insurance claim processing, third-party billing procedures, and revenue cycle management
Excellent attention to detail with the ability to interpret complex medical documentation accurately
Knowledge of health insurance policies, health insurance claim processing, and medical collection procedures
Effective communication skills for collaborating with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patients

Qualifications

At least five years of medical billing experience required
Experience working in a small clinic, independent practice, or similar healthcare setting strongly preferred
Strong understanding of medical billing workflows, insurance claims, ERAs, patient statements, denials, and accounts receivable
Familiarity with commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer requirements, as applicable
Experience using electronic health record and practice-management systems
High degree of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to explain billing matters to patients clearly, respectfully, and professionally
Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines
Sound judgment when handling confidential patient and financial information
Knowledge of HIPAA and healthcare privacy requirements

Preferred Qualifications

Professional billing or coding certification, such as CPB, CPC, or an equivalent credential
Experience with claim-denial management and insurance follow-up
Experience supporting the full billing cycle in a small healthcare practice
Familiarity with our clinic’s specialty and payer mix

Schedule and Work Environment

This is a part-time position requiring approximately 20-30 hours per week. The schedule can be flexible as role requirements adjust, and the position will be on-site. Occasional schedule adjustments may be needed to meet billing deadlines or address time-sensitive payer issues.
