Medical Billing Accounts Receivable Specialist

Position Type: Full-Time
Department: Medical Billing / Revenue Cycle
Reports To: Practice & Billing Leadership

*Salary: Commensurate on Experience*

*This is NOT a remote position

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly organized Medical Billing Accounts Receivable Specialist to help oversee accounts receivable activities and support the overall financial performance of our medical practice. This position is responsible for monitoring outstanding insurance and patient balances, identifying payment delays and denial trends, ensuring timely follow-up on unpaid claims, and providing guidance and accountability to the billing team.

The ideal candidate has strong medical billing and revenue cycle experience, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to oversee daily AR operations while maintaining accuracy, productivity, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee daily accounts receivable activities and ensure timely follow-up on outstanding insurance and patient balances.
Monitor AR aging reports and prioritize accounts requiring immediate attention.
Review and analyze outstanding claims to identify trends, delays, underpayments, and reimbursement issues.
Ensure denied and rejected claims are researched, corrected, appealed, and resubmitted within required timeframes.
Track team productivity, AR performance, denial rates, collection trends, and other key revenue cycle metrics.
Provide day-to-day direction, training, and support to billing and AR staff.
Establish clear expectations for claim follow-up, documentation, productivity, and account resolution.
Conduct routine account audits to ensure billing staff are documenting and working accounts appropriately.
Identify workflow issues and implement processes to improve collections and reduce outstanding AR.
Research payer-specific billing requirements and assist with resolving complex insurance issues.
Monitor timely filing deadlines and ensure claims and appeals are submitted within payer requirements.
Assist with insurance payment discrepancies, underpayments, recoupments, and payment posting concerns.
Work closely with providers, clinical staff, front-office staff, and leadership to resolve billing and documentation issues affecting reimbursement.
Assist with onboarding and training new billing team members.
Maintain knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance, and other payer requirements.
Ensure billing practices comply with HIPAA, payer guidelines, and applicable federal and state regulations.
Provide regular updates to leadership regarding AR performance, significant payer issues, collection opportunities, and areas requiring improvement.

Qualifications

Minimum 3–5 years of medical billing and accounts receivable experience required.
Previous experience using eClinical Works (eCW) strongly preferred.
Strong knowledge of the complete medical revenue cycle strongly preferred.
Experience working insurance AR, including aged and complex accounts.
Strong understanding of claim denials, appeals, payment posting, insurance follow-up, and patient balances.
Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance billing requirements.
Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, EOBs, and ERAs.
Experience reviewing and interpreting AR aging and billing performance reports.
Strong attention to detail and ability to identify trends and discrepancies.
Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to establish expectations and promote accountability for productivity and timely account follow-up.
Ability to handle confidential patient and financial information appropriately.Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a multi-provider or multi-location medical practice.
Experience with practice management and electronic health record systems.
Experience developing AR workflows, productivity standards, and performance metrics.
Knowledge of payer portals, clearinghouses, claim edits, and electronic claim submission processes.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who takes ownership of the accounts receivable process and understands that successful medical billing requires consistent follow-up, attention to detail, and accountability. The right candidate will be comfortable digging into aging reports, identifying why claims are not being paid, supporting and guiding our billing team, and working proactively to improve collections and reduce outstanding AR.
