Certification and Licensure:
- CPR Certification required within 30 days of hire.
Education and Experience:
An SLP-A must complete an approved course of academic study, field work under the supervision of an ASHA-certified and/or licensed SLP, and on-the-job training specific to SLP-A responsibilities and workplace behaviors.
- Required: Associate's degree in an SLPA program
or
a Bachelor's Degree in a Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders program
and
- successful completion of a minimum of one hundred (100) hours of supervised field work experience or its clinical experience equivalent
and
- demonstration of competency in the skills required of an SLPA.
Essential Functions, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- The speech-language therapist assistant implements appropriate treatment techniques per the plan of care to maximize patient function. Adhere to the responsibilities for SLP-As specified in this document and refrain from performing tasks or activities that are the sole responsibility of the SLP. Conduct oneself ethically within the scope of practice and responsibilities for an SLPA.
- Adapts conventional therapy techniques to meet the needs of patient. Adaptations are based on the patients’ and families’ physical and cognitive capabilities, intelligence level, interests, and discharge plans.
- Provides patient care in a safe and therapeutic environment by maintaining the privacy of the patients and families as described by HIPAA standards.
- Provides education to the patients and family members from admission to discharge by providing individualized instructions to maximize function.
- Demonstrates competency and knowledge of current standards of practice within the profession. Actively pursue continuing education and professional development activities.
- Engages in continuous quality improvement activities to evaluate compliance to standards, policies and procedures, and identifies strategies to improve patient care.
- Securing liability insurance.
- On date of session, documents patients’ evaluation of progress on EHR through daily SOAP notes and on flow charts in soft chart system.
- Maintains patient confidentiality by keeping information private as described by HIPAA standards.
- Completes at least the minimum supervision requirements for students/interns on site, as assigned by SLP director.
- Maintains a working knowledge of all Family Solutions services and capabilities offered to the community.
