Position Summary
The Safety Director at Trantham Services is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of safety and compliance across transportation operations, agricultural sites, and maintenance facilities. This role ensures adherence to FMCSA, OSHA, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The Safety Director fosters a proactive safety culture through training, audits, data analysis, and direct engagement with employees across all company complexes.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Leadership & Visibility
- Maintain a regular physical presence across all company locations including offices, shops, farms, feed mills, and plants.
- Build strong relationships with employees through approachability and consistent engagement.
- Conduct farm visits to verify driver safety protocol compliance and log all visits.
- Lead incident investigations and root cause analyses; implement corrective actions.
- Monitor and analyze safety performance metrics; report trends and recommendations to leadership.
- Partner with Operations, Maintenance, and HR safety goals align with business objectives in driver monitoring and legal compliance including hours of service.
Training & Development
- Oversee safety orientation, In-Person training, and ongoing education for all employees.
- Maintain and assign safety video training via our LMS; monitor completion by location.
- Ensure all employees are trained in shop safety, farm safety, forklift operation, and emergency preparedness.
- Serve as a Certified Smith System Trainer, ensuring all drivers are certified.
Driver Safety & Observations
- Manage the ride-along program.
- Collaborate with Fleet Managers and operational leaders to conduct ride-alongs.
Drive Cam Program Management
- Administer the Drive Cam system, assigning and reviewing video events.
- Coach drivers and managers on reducing coachable events and improving driving behavior.
Incident Management & Compliance
- Conduct root cause analysis for all incidents, near-misses, injuries, and accidents.
- Generate required reports and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with FMCSA, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies through audits and inspections.
Workers’ Compensation & Return-to-Work
- Oversee workers’ compensation claims in coordination with the Director of Safety.
- Maintain weekly contact with injured employees and their representatives.
- Assign transitional duties for employees released to light duty per company policy.
Driver Training Program Oversight
- Oversee the implementation and consistency of the Driver Training Program.
- Ensure training checklists are completed and submitted.
- Coordinate and verify completion of Initial Ride-Alongs for new hires.
- Approve and maintain the list of qualified driver trainers, ensuring they meet exemplary standards.
- Lead retraining efforts when deficiencies are identified, with retraining limited to one opportunity per trainer.
- Ensure all trainers follow the Driver Training Matrix to maintain uniformity in instruction across all locations including conducting periodic farm checks and ride-alongs with trainers to validate procedural compliance.
Driver Risk Reduction Strategy

Key Initiatives
- Smith System Certification:
- All drivers are certified every two years in the Smith System of defensive driving to reinforce safe habits and hazard awareness.
- Ride-Along Program:
Each driver is observed through our ride along program to ensure compliance with safety protocols and to provide real-time coaching and feedback.
The Drive Cam system is actively monitored to identify coachable events. Safety staff and Fleet Managers collaborate to reduce risky behaviors through targeted coaching.Weekly safety videos are assigned and tracked via our LMS, ensuring consistent education on evolving risks and best practices.Monthly visits to operational sites verify driver compliance with safety procedures and allow for direct engagement and correction.All incidents, near-misses, and violations are investigated for root cause. Findings are used to improve training and operational procedures.Safety staff maintain a visible and approachable presence across all locations, fostering a culture of openness and accountability.Qualifications

- Minimum 2-year experience in the transportation industry, safety management experience, or an associate degree in a related field.
- Valid Class A CDL and willingness to travel to all company complexes.
- Ability to work in outdoor environments and all climates.
- Strong time management, problem-solving, and multitasking skills.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and customer service abilities.
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform daily tasks such as walking, climbing stairs, and squatting.
- In-depth knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA regulations.
- Proven experience managing safety across multiple locations or facilities.
Preferred Experience & Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Transportation Management, or related field.
- Minimum 5–10 years of safety leadership experience in the transportation industry.
- Certifications such as CSP, CHST, or OSHA 10/30 are highly desirable.
- Experience in transportation, agriculture, or industrial safety environments.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $70,000 – $80,000 per year (commensurate with experience)
