- Standing and walking on concrete floors for the length of the shift, typically eight to ten hours with scheduled breaks.
- Gripping, grasping, and fine hand manipulation to hold and control the welding gun, torch, grinder, and hand tools.
- Near vision, depth perception, and color vision to read prints and inspect welds.
- Hearing sufficient to detect alarms, horns, crane signals, and equipment noise.
Frequent — one-third to two-thirds of the shift:
- Bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling to reach joints at floor level.
- Reaching overhead and away from the body to weld out of position.
- Twisting at the neck and trunk to follow a weld.
- Lifting and carrying material weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Pushing and pulling carts, fixtures, and material across the shop floor.
Occasional — up to one-third of the shift:
- Working in confined or awkward positions inside or beneath weldments.
- Climbing stairs, ladders, and platforms, or stepping onto equipment and fixtures.
- Lifting and carrying material weighing 26 to 50 pounds.
- Handling material weighing 51 to 75 pounds, only with assistance from a coworker or a lifting device; anything heavier is moved with the overhead crane or forklift.
- Wearing a respirator or air-purifying protection, depending on the material and the operation.
Sitting is not a regular part of this position.
Work is performed in an industrial fabrication shop and occasionally in the outdoor yard. The environment includes exposure to welding fumes, arc flash, sparks, hot metal, grinding dust, noise, moving overhead loads, powered industrial equipment, oils and solvents, and seasonal temperature extremes. Required PPE includes welding helmet, flame-resistant clothing, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toe boots. Respiratory protection is required for certain operations.
