Welding Shop Supervisor

Job Description

Position Summary

The Welding Shop Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the welding shop, ensuring that all fabrication and welding work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. This role manages welders and fabricators, coordinates production schedules, enforces safety protocols, and serves as the technical lead for complex welding projects.

Production Manager / Operations Manager

Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Supervision

Supervise, schedule, and direct a team of welders, fabricators, and shop helpers
Assign jobs based on skill level, certifications, and workload priorities
Train, mentor, and evaluate team members; identify skill gaps and coordinate development
Conduct performance reviews, provide coaching, and handle disciplinary actions when needed
Lead daily toolbox talks and shift huddles

Production & Operations

Plan and coordinate daily, weekly, and monthly production schedules to meet deadlines
Review blueprints, weld symbols, WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications), and shop drawings to ensure proper job execution
Monitor work in progress to verify accuracy, quality, and adherence to specifications
Troubleshoot fabrication and welding issues; recommend process improvements
Coordinate with purchasing to maintain adequate inventory of consumables (rod, wire, gas, PPE, etc.)
Maintain shop equipment and schedule preventive maintenance and repairs

Quality Control

Ensure all welds meet AWS, ASME, API, or applicable code requirements
Perform and document visual inspections; coordinate NDT (non-destructive testing) as required
Maintain weld logs, traceability records, and qualification documentation
Investigate quality issues and implement corrective actions

Safety & Compliance

Enforce OSHA standards and all company safety policies
Ensure proper use of PPE, ventilation, hot work permits, and lockout/tagout procedures
Conduct safety audits, incident investigations, and near-miss reporting
Maintain SDS records and hazardous material handling protocols

Administrative

Track labor hours, job costs, and productivity metrics
Prepare reports on output, scrap rates, downtime, and KPIs for management
Communicate with project managers, engineers, estimators, and customers as needed

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; technical or trade school certification in welding preferred
5+ years of hands-on welding experience (MIG, TIG, Stick, Flux-Core)
2+ years in a lead or supervisory role in a fabrication or welding shop
AWS certification(s) such as CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) strongly preferred, or willingness to obtain
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings
Working knowledge of AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, or other applicable codes
Strong understanding of metals (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum) and their welding characteristics
Proficiency with shop equipment: press brakes, shears, plasma/oxy-fuel cutting, grinders, overhead cranes
Basic computer skills (email, ERP/MRP systems, MS Office)

Preferred Skills

Experience with Lean manufacturing or 5S principles
Familiarity with structural, pressure vessel, or pipe fabrication
Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
Forklift and overhead crane certifications

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly throughout the shift
Comfortable working in a shop environment with heat, fumes, noise, and exposure to welding arcs
Vision (with or without correction) sufficient to inspect welds and read drawings

Work Environment & Schedule

Shop floor environment, often with overtime or weekend work depending on production demands
Typically first shift; occasional second shift or on-call coverage may be required
