Full Job Description

Under general supervision and in accordance with established policies and procedures, the Behavioral Health Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive, patient-centered care to individuals within the Behavioral Health Unit. This role is responsible for delivering a wide range of nursing and supportive services to ensure the safety, stability, and well-being of patients.The Behavioral Health RN conducts thorough assessments of patients’ physical, psychological, and social needs, utilizing clinical judgment to identify risks and develop appropriate interventions. They actively participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of individualized plans of care, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to promote positive patient outcomes.In addition, the RN provides therapeutic support, administers medications, monitors patient progress, and ensures a safe and structured environment. Strong communication, critical thinking, and compassionate care are essential to effectively support patients experiencing mental health challenges and crises.

1. Establish and maintain behavioral supervision

2. Maintain implementation of safe individual therapeutic milieu.

3. Implement specific assigned aspects of the treatment plan.

4. Assist in the planning and supervision of leisure activities.

5. Initiating problem lists which indicate patient focused needs and is reflected on the treatment plan.

6. Respond to emergency crisis situations using proper de-escalation procedures.

7. Assume charge nurse role as needed, supervise staff, delegate duties, coordinate staffing needs and keep manager-on-call informed of significant events.

8. Participate in the observation and documentation of the patient’s treatment.

9. Conducts an individualized patient assessment, prioritizing the data collection based on the adolescent’s immediate condition or needs within timeframe

10. Monitors and records resident milieu and recreational activities, behavior, emotions and interpersonal relationships relating to nursing-medical condition.

11. Develops plan of care that is individualized for the adolescent patient reflecting collaboration with other members of the healthcare team.

12. Performs appropriate interventions as ordered by physicians in an accurate and timely manner.

13. Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as established by individualized plan of care for the patient and his/her family.

14. Provides individualized client/family education customized to the patient and his/her family.

15. Documents client assessment findings, behavioral/psychosocial responses to nursing intervention and progress towards problem resolution.

16. Initiates emergency resuscitative measures according to resuscitation protocols.

17. Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patient, family and patient family staff.

18. Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to the patient’s and family’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity and rights.

19. Reports patient condition to appropriate personnel during each shift.

20. Maintains current competency in client psychiatric/mental health nursing including the safe use of restraints and seclusion.

21. Learns and adheres to the hospital’s mission, objectives, policies and procedures.
