Self-Directed Learner (SDL) Facilitator Teacher
Position Summary
The Self-Directed Learner (SDL) Facilitator Teacher supports and manages the implementation of the District’s Self-Directed Learner program in alignment with WASD Policy. This position is responsible for coordinating SDL assignment plans, communicating with students and families, monitoring submission timelines, and ensuring accurate attendance coding in accordance with District procedures. The SDL Facilitator Teacher ensures that all SDL activities are aligned to instructional standards and reinforces that SDL is a supplemental option, not a replacement for in-person instruction.
Supervision Received
The SDL Facilitator Teacher works under the direction of the Director of Student Information Systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Implement and monitor the Self-Directed Learner (SDL) process in accordance with District policy and Idaho Code 33-512 eligibility criteria.
- Verify that SDL requests are submitted in advance and meet eligibility requirements.
- Collaborate with building administrators to ensure appropriate approval and oversight of SDL participation.
- Monitors SDL requests for appropriate use and compliance with District expectations; communicates concerns related to misuse or patterns of concern to building administration.
- Develop and communicate SDL assignment plans to students and parents/guardians that include learning activities such as research, projects, study, or presentations aligned with content standards.
- Provide clear expectations, directions, and timelines for completion of SDL assignments.
- Maintain consistent, professional, and timely communication with families regarding SDL expectations and student progress.
- Utilize Microsoft Copilot and district resources, as appropriate, to support development of clear, standards-aligned instructional materials and communications.
- Track and monitor submission timelines to ensure all SDL work is completed within 10 school days following the student’s return.
- Review and evaluate SDL work for completeness and adherence to assigned requirements.
- Determine whether submitted work meets expectations for successful completion.
- Coordinate with SIIS team and building attendance staff to ensure absences are initially coded as Parent Communication (PRC) and accurately updated to SDL upon successful completion of requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of SDL requests, assignments, submissions, and outcomes.
- Ensure that incomplete or unacceptable work results in appropriate attendance coding remaining in place.
- Work collaboratively with the SIIS team, building counselors, and administrators to support student learning and ensure alignment with instructional expectations.
- Provide guidance to staff and families regarding SDL procedures and requirements.
- Support consistent implementation of SDL practices across the school or district.
- Collaborate with the Director of Student Data Management, Compliance & Staff Support and/or Accountability, SIIS, and Support, as assigned.
General Teaching Responsibilities
- Provide instruction and/or learning design aligned to Idaho Content Standards and District curriculum.
- Differentiate learning opportunities to meet diverse student needs.
- Maintain accurate student records, grading, and documentation in the District’s student information system.
- Establish a positive, safe, and respectful learning environment.
- Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and staff.
- Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and required trainings.
- Adhere to all District policies, procedures, and professional standards.
Minimum Qualification:
Knowledge of:
- Idaho Content Standards, District curriculum, and effective instructional practices.
- District policies, Idaho Code, and procedures governing the Self-Directed Learner (SDL) program and student attendance.
- Principles of differentiated instruction and designing independent learning opportunities that support student achievement.
- Assessment practices used to evaluate student learning and monitor student progress.
- Student information systems, attendance reporting, recordkeeping practices, and documentation requirements.
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, and SharePoint), Microsoft Teams, and other district-approved technology platforms.
- District-approved artificial intelligence (AI) tools and appropriate practices for developing instructional materials, communications, and other work products while exercising professional judgment.
- Effective written and verbal communication practices for working with students, families, school staff, and community partners.
- Applicable laws, regulations, and District procedures related to student privacy, confidentiality, and educational records, including FERPA requirements.
Ability to:
- Coordinate and implement the Self-Directed Learner program in compliance with District policies, procedures, and Idaho Code.
- Develop clear, standards-aligned independent learning assignments that promote student engagement and academic growth.
- Interpret eligibility requirements, monitor program compliance, and ensure accurate documentation and attendance reporting.
- Evaluate student work and determine successful completion of assigned learning activities using established expectations.
- Utilize Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams, district-approved AI software, and other District technology systems to create, edit, manage, and communicate information effectively.
- Quickly learn and adapt to new software applications, online portals, student information systems, and other District technology resources.
- Perform general office functions, including accurate data entry, keyboarding, filing, copying, scanning, and maintaining electronic and paper records with exceptional attention to detail.
- Maintain accurate records, monitor timelines, manage multiple priorities, and consistently meet established deadlines.
- Communicate professionally, courteously, and effectively with students, parents/guardians, staff, administrators, and external agencies while providing exceptional customer service.
- Collaborate effectively with building and District personnel to promote consistent implementation of Self-Directed Learner practices.
- Exercise sound judgment, attention to detail, and discretion when handling confidential student information and ensuring compliance with FERPA and District policies.
- Analyze situations, identify solutions, troubleshoot basic technical issues, and resolve problems in a timely and effective manner.
- Work independently while managing competing priorities and contributing effectively as a collaborative member of a team.
- Balance instructional expectations with flexibility and student support while ensuring consistent and equitable implementation of the Self-Directed Learner program.
- Maintain professionalism, integrity, regular attendance, and adherence to District policies and ethical standards.
Qualifications
Any equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Valid Idaho Teaching Certificate, as required by the State of Idaho, for position to which the teacher is assigned.
- Strong knowledge of curriculum, instructional practices, and assessment methods.
- Demonstrated ability to design independent, standards-aligned learning activities.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage timelines and documentation.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to interpret and apply District policies and procedures consistently.
