Full Job Description

Position Summary

Tower Consulting Engineers is seeking a qualified, experienced Fire and Life Safety Director (FLSD) holding a valid F-89 Certificate of Fitness issued by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) to provide fire and life safety services at our clients' facilities. The FLSD will be responsible for implementing and maintaining fire and life safety programs, coordinating emergency preparedness activities, conducting drills and training, and ensuring compliance with applicable FDNY, NFPA, OSHA, and other safety requirements.

The successful candidate must demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and emergency preparedness skills. The position may require assignments at multiple client facilities based on operational needs.

Experience, Education & Certifications

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid F-89 Certificate of Fitness issued by the FDNY.
Valid CPR and First Aid certifications.
Working knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), FDNY, and New York City fire and life safety codes and requirements.
Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience, including developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive Emergency Evacuation Plans and related documentation.
Experience conducting emergency drills, fire safety training, and emergency preparedness activities.
Experience working with building management, occupants, contractors, and public agencies in connection with fire and life safety operations is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

The Fire and Life Safety Director's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Develop, implement, maintain, and periodically update Emergency Evacuation Plans and supporting documentation.
Coordinate fire and emergency drills, including planning, scheduling, execution, documentation, and evaluation in accordance with applicable codes and industry standards.
Conduct on-site emergency drills and evaluate staff and occupant performance.
Design and deliver structured fire and life safety training programs for fire wardens, deputy wardens, searchers, and other designated emergency personnel.
Train building fire wardens and searchers and maintain fire and emergency preparedness awareness programs for building occupants.
Develop standard operating procedures, schedules, checklists, and other documentation for emergency preparedness activities.
Develop and implement occupant notification and alert protocols, including procedures for elderly individuals, persons with disabilities, and other occupants who may require assistance during an emergency.
Identify potential structural, operational, and procedural fire and life safety hazards and recommend appropriate corrective or preventive measures.
Advise building management regarding emergency reporting procedures, including communication with the FDNY and coordination of occupant assistance information.
Coordinate fire and life safety activities with internal teams, facility personnel, building management, contractors, and external agencies.
Maintain accurate records of drills, training, incidents, inspections, and other required fire and life safety activities.
Prepare incident documentation and post-drill evaluations and recommend improvements to emergency procedures and safety protocols.
Monitor compliance with applicable FDNY requirements, NYC fire and life safety regulations, NFPA standards, OSHA requirements, and facility procedures.
Provide fire and life safety services at multiple client facilities when required.
Provide similar fire and life safety services for other New York City agencies or client locations as assigned.
Perform other related duties as required to support the organization's fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and life safety objectives.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The successful candidate should possess:

Strong working knowledge of FDNY and New York City policies, procedures, codes, and requirements related to fire and life safety.
Strong knowledge of emergency preparedness, evacuation procedures, fire prevention, and incident response.
Ability to identify problems and develop effective solutions as situations arise.
Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
Ability to conduct presentations, training sessions, drills, and group meetings effectively.
Strong organizational and documentation skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with building occupants, management, emergency personnel, and government agencies.
Ability to lead, mentor, coach, train, and coordinate the activities of others.
Ability to remain professional and make sound decisions during emergency situations.
Ability to work independently while effectively coordinating with client and management teams.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically capable of performing assigned duties in a variety of environmental and weather conditions.
Must be able to frequently lift and/or carry items weighing up to 15 pounds.
Must be able to occasionally lift and/or carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Must be capable of moving throughout assigned facilities as necessary to conduct inspections, drills, training, and emergency response activities.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, with scheduled hours falling between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Standard workweek is 35 hours.
Occasional overtime, evening, or weekend work may be required depending on client needs, emergency situations, drills, or special assignments.

Compensation & Benefits

Hourly Rate: $33–$40 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Travel

Approximately 10% travel may be required, including travel between client facilities and occasional travel to the Tower Consulting Engineers home office.
