Full Job Description

Part-Time Registered Nurse (RN)

Opioid Treatment Program (Methadone Clinic)

Department: Nursing

Reports To: Director of Nursing (DON) or Designee

Administrative Oversight: Executive Director

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Employment Status: Part-Time

Compensation: $45.00–$48.00 per hour (commensurate with experience and qualifications)

Work Schedule: Part-Time (3 days per week), Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with alternating Saturdays as scheduled.

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing services to patients receiving treatment in the Opioid Treatment Program (OTP). The RN is responsible for medication administration, nursing assessments, venipuncture and specimen collection, patient education, infection prevention, medication inventory, clinical documentation, and coordination of care in accordance with New Jersey Department of Health (NJ DOH) regulations, federal Opioid Treatment Program requirements, DEA controlled substance regulations, applicable nursing standards, and agency policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the State of New Jersey.
Current CPR/BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Minimum of one (1) year of nursing experience preferred; however, qualified new graduates with demonstrated clinical competency are encouraged to apply.
Experience in addiction medicine, behavioral health, public health, emergency medicine, or primary care preferred.
Demonstrated competency in venipuncture/phlebotomy.
Knowledge of infection prevention and universal precautions.
Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary treatment team.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
Computer proficiency including electronic health records (Methasoft) and Microsoft Office.

Essential Functions

Clinical Nursing

Perform nursing assessments on new admissions and existing patients.
Obtain and document medical histories.
Perform physical health screenings within the RN scope of practice.
Perform venipuncture and collect laboratory specimens in accordance with physician orders and clinic protocols.
Process laboratory specimens following established chain-of-custody procedures when applicable.
Monitor patient vital signs and physical status.
Identify changes in patient condition and immediately notify the physician or appropriate licensed provider.
Respond appropriately to medical emergencies.

Medication Administration

Administer methadone and other medications as prescribed by the Medical Director or authorized prescriber.
Verify patient identity prior to medication administration.
Observe patients during medication administration as required.
Monitor patients for adverse reactions or signs of intoxication, impairment, withdrawal, or overdose.
Hold medication and immediately notify the Medical Director when clinically indicated.
Educate patients regarding medication safety and proper storage of take-home medication.

Controlled Substance Accountability

Maintain accurate controlled substance inventory.
Perform opening and closing narcotic counts.
Reconcile medication inventory daily.
Document medication wastage with appropriate witness documentation.
Report medication discrepancies immediately.
Maintain security of controlled substances in accordance with DEA regulations and agency policy.

Laboratory Services

Perform venipuncture for admissions, annual physicals, physician orders, and ongoing patient monitoring.
Collect blood specimens for CBC, CMP, Hepatitis testing, HIV testing (when authorized), pregnancy testing, TB testing, and other laboratory studies ordered by the physician.
Collect and monitor urine drug screens in accordance with clinic policies.
Monitor same-gender specimen collection when required.
Ensure proper specimen labeling and documentation.

Documentation

Complete all nursing documentation accurately and timely.
Document assessments, interventions, medication administration, laboratory collections, patient education, and physician communications.
Complete documentation within Methasoft on the date services are provided.
Electronically sign documentation daily.
Maintain documentation in compliance with NJ DOH regulations and agency policies.

Infection Prevention

Follow Standard Precautions and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards.
Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Maintain a clean and safe medication room.
Dispose of sharps and biohazard materials appropriately.
Monitor refrigerator temperatures and medication storage conditions.
Participate in infection control activities.

Patient Education

Provide education regarding:

Methadone treatment
Medication safety
Overdose prevention
Naloxone
Infectious disease prevention
HIV
Hepatitis
Tuberculosis
Pregnancy and maternal health
Tobacco cessation
Wellness promotion

Care Coordination

Communicate patient concerns to counselors, physicians, nurse practitioners, and other treatment team members.
Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings.
Coordinate care with hospitals, correctional facilities, primary care providers, specialists, and community agencies when authorized.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

Participate in:

Clinical chart reviews
Medication audits
Infection control monitoring
Incident investigations
Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QAPI)
Regulatory surveys
Internal compliance audits
Policy review and implementation

Physical Requirements

Standing for extended periods.
Frequent walking.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

Manual dexterity sufficient for medication preparation and administration.
