General Description

Under the supervision of the laboratory Manager and the direction of the Laboratory Director, the Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for collecting, receiving, and processing patient specimens for clinical laboratory testing. This role also includes patient registration, ensuring that patient demographic information is accurate and up to date, and verifying that appropriate physician orders are in place to facilitate timely and accurate laboratory testing.

Responsibilities & Duties

Ensure accurate and up to date patient electronic health records.
Utilize the health system’s EHR to obtain laboratory orders from the providers.
Schedule lab appointments as appropriate.
Utilize the Lab Information System, Orchard Harvest.
Demonstrate professional interaction with patients and coworkers.
Proficient in utilizing computer systems and software applications.
Provide Phlebotomy services; collecting adequate and correct specimens by venipuncture or capillary procedure on adults, children, and/or infants.
Follow department policies to correctly identify the patient verifying the date of birth and name before collections of any specimen for the lab and label the specimens correctly with either the labels with patient information or hand-written names with date, time and initial and will process specimens correctly according to testing requirements.
Collect specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
Accession, label and package specimens for outside testing facilities.
Notify supervisor of unresolved requisition errors or specimen integrity problems.
Perform duties with a minimum of supervision.
Be a dependable team member of the clinic setting and be ready to start work on time.
Recognize and demonstrate that the laboratory Assistant I serves as a representative of the department and is responsible for creating and welcoming, professional, and compassionate environment by engaging with patients in a manner that promotes comfort, confidence, and a positive healthcare experience.
Safeguard confidentiality of the medical charts/records and complies with all local, state, and federal laws pertaining to medical records. Assure compliance with HIPPA regulations concerning use, retrieval, storage and sharing of medical records.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education Requirements and Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.
Confirmation of an approved phlebotomy course or, on the job training in phlebotomy with at least 1 year of experience.
Experience with medical records and medical office procedures.
Familiar with Microsoft Office applications.
Familiar with Laboratory test language and CPT codes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must be reliable, detailed oriented, capable of multi-tasking with excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as strong professional customer- service interpersonal skills.
Good organizational and assessment skills.
Ability to relate well with co-workers and the general public.
Ability to adjust to changing conditions.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Must meet all healthcare immunization requirements.
Must be computer literate required (Windows operating systems – Microsoft Word, Excel).
Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
Sitting or standing or walking for long period of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking hearing and visual acuity
Frequent lifting (up to 15 lbs)
Occasional lifting (up to 30 lbs)

General clinical environment with frequent exposure to chemicals, blood borne pathogens, and patient body fluids.
