Position Summary
As an NDT Assistant, you play a critical role in supporting the inspection of essential infrastructure such as pipelines, pressure vessels, and structural steel. Working alongside certified NDT Technicians, you help ensure materials are evaluated safely and accurately using non-destructive testing methods like X-ray, ultrasonic testing, and dye penetrant testing, without damaging the components being inspected.
This position is an entry point into the NDT industry, offering hands-on experience, structured training, and a clear path toward certification and career advancement.
What Your Day Looks Like
- Travel to industrial job sites (plants, refineries, pipelines, or field locations), including early mornings, overnight stays, and extended assignments
- Assist in setting up inspection equipment such as X-ray units, ultrasonic systems, and associated cables and tools
- Support technicians during inspections by taking readings, handling equipment, applying test materials, and maintaining safe work zones
- Follow strict safety protocols, especially when working around radiation, confined spaces, elevated work areas, or industrial hazards
- Assist with teardown of equipment and help complete documentation and site cleanup after inspections
- Work outdoors and in industrial environments, often on your feet for long periods in varying weather conditions

Essential Functions
- Assist in setup and operation of NDT equipment in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and procedures
- Support execution of multiple NDT methods, including:
- Gamma radiography
- X-ray radiography
- Magnetic particle testing
- Liquid penetrant testing
- Ultrasonic testing
- Leak testing
- Visual inspections
- Assist in equipment preparation, calibration, loading, and operation under technician supervision
- Help identify and document material defects using established testing methods
- Drive company vehicles safely and maintain a clean driving record
- Learn job tasks from Lead Technicians and progressively take on more responsibility
- Follow all safety instructions to protect yourself and the entire crew
Other Functions
- Perform general cleaning and minor maintenance of company vehicles and equipment
- Inspect tools and equipment to ensure proper working condition
- Maintain clean and organized shop and field work areas
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Requirements
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
Certification & Licensure
- Valid driver’s license required
- Must be insurable under PROtect LLC insurance carrier
Work Experience
- Prior field, mechanical, construction, or industrial experience preferred but not required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn technical skills
- Strong commitment to safety and ability to follow strict procedures
- Ability to work long shifts (up to 16 hours), including call-outs and extended travel assignments
- Physically able to perform demanding field work (lifting, carrying, climbing, kneeling, working in confined spaces, and exposure to extreme environments)
- Professional communication and ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Reliable, punctual, and able to follow detailed instructions from supervisors
- Comfortable working in industrial environments with safety hazards and PPE requirements
