Job Summary
The Town of Lewisboro Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a dependable, compassionate, and safety conscious Van Driver (Chauffeur) to provide transportation and program support for participants in our Senior Outreach Program and Senior Adult Recreation Programs. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with older adults and wants to make a meaningful difference by helping seniors remain active, independent, and connected to the community.
General Statement of Duties
Operates an automotive vehicle transporting senior citizens and other members of the public on assigned routes to recreation programs, shopping destinations, medical appointments, community facilities, and special events. Performs related duties as required.
Distinguishing Features of the Position
This is manual work of average difficulty requiring skill in the safe operation of a passenger van. The driver is responsible for the safety, comfort, and conduct of passengers while providing reliable transportation services. In addition to driving responsibilities, this position provides basic assistance during senior recreation programs and may assist passengers with mobility limitations when entering or exiting the vehicle. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Safely operate a Town bus or passenger van on scheduled routes and for special trips.
- Provide transportation for participants in the Town's Senior Outreach and Recreation programs.
- Transport seniors to medical appointments in a safe, timely, and professional manner.
- Transport seniors on shopping trips to local grocery stores and other shopping destinations.
- Transport participants to and from the weekly Wednesday program.
- Assist the Program Director in the operation of the Wednesday program.
- Assist with the setup, conduct, and cleanup of recreational, educational, and social activities, including games, special events, guest presentations, and other senior programming.
- Welcome participants, assist with attendance records and sign-in procedures, and help maintain participation records as required.
- Monitor participants throughout the program, promote a safe and inclusive environment, and assist in maintaining order and adherence to program guidelines.
- Assist participants with activities, distribute and collect program supplies and equipment, and help prepare activity areas before and after programs.
- Assist with chaperoning senior trips, outings, and special events as assigned.
- Assist with light clerical duties such as preparing mailings and organizing program materials
- Safely assist participants entering and exiting the vehicle, those with walkers, canes, folding wheelchairs, shopping bags, and other personal belongings as needed.
- Provide courteous door-to-door assistance when appropriate while encouraging passenger safety and independence.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections and check the operating condition of the vehicle before each trip.
- Report any operational defects or maintenance concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
- Maintain the interior and exterior cleanliness of the assigned vehicle.
- Maintain accurate records of mileage, routes, schedules, attendance, and incidents as required.
- Assist with route planning and help maintain pickup and drop-off schedules and route maps.
- May assist in providing basic first aid within the scope of training and Town policy.
- Follow all Town policies and procedures while ensuring a safe, respectful, welcoming, and inclusive environment for participants.
- Build positive relationships with senior participants while providing exceptional customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Attributes
The successful candidate should possess:
- Good knowledge of safe driving practices and applicable traffic laws and regulations.
- Ability to safely operate an automobile or passenger van under varying road and weather conditions.
- Ability to assist older adults and individuals with limited mobility in a safe, respectful, and dignified manner.
- Ability to make minor vehicle repairs or identify maintenance needs.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Mechanical aptitude and sound judgment.
- Dependability, punctuality, patience, compassion, and strong attention to safety.
- Mental alertness and the ability to respond appropriately to changing driving conditions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Physical ability to assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle and to lift and transport mobility aids, shopping bags, and other items associated with the position.
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Pay: $27.50 - $29.50 per hour
