Position Overview
Franklin Academy’s Permanent Substitute Teacher is a position centered on student support. This part-time position (Mon/Wed/Fri 8:30 AM - 2:45 PM & Tue/Thur 10:00 AM - 2:45 PM) provides instructional and student support coverage across the school community. When teachers are absent, the Permanent Substitute Teacher delivers instruction using lesson plans and materials prepared by the classroom teacher, maintains a positive learning environment, and ensures continuity of instruction. When all teachers are present, the Permanent Substitute Teacher works directly with students to provide academic, organizational, and executive functioning support, helping students engage successfully in their daily routines and school responsibilities. This role requires flexibility, strong relationship-building skills, effective communication, and a student-centered approach.
Duties
- Provide classroom coverage and instruction during teacher absences using teacher-prepared lesson plans and materials.
- Maintain a safe, productive, and respectful classroom environment.
- Take attendance, supervise students, and communicate relevant information to advisors and teachers.
- Support students in completing assigned coursework and staying engaged during instructional periods.
- Assist students with morning routines, transitions, and readiness for the school day.
- Help students organize materials, manage schedules, and navigate daily responsibilities.
- Reinforce executive functioning skills such as planning, time management, task initiation, and organization.
- Collaborate with teachers, advisors, and student support personnel to address student needs.
- Assist with study halls, academic support periods, and other student support programming as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Education, Psychology, Human Development, Special Education, or a related field.
Preferred:
- Previous experience as a substitute teacher, paraprofessional, teaching assistant, academic support specialist, or similar role.
- Experience working with neurodivergent students, including students with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, executive functioning challenges, or learning differences.
- Knowledge of classroom management strategies and differentiated instructional practices.
- Familiarity with supporting executive functioning skills, including organization, planning, time management, and task initiation.
- Experience working with school-aged students in an educational, youth development, or related setting.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing schedules, classrooms, and student needs.
