Position Overview
Bloomsburie is seeking an IT Specialist to provide technical and operational support at the National Coast Guard Museum in New London, Connecticut.
The IT Specialist will support the museum’s digital infrastructure, interactive exhibits, localized server networks, telecommunications systems, and related technology assets. This position will troubleshoot technical issues, maintain system availability, respond to outages, coordinate with AV and museum personnel, and help ensure visitor-facing technology remains operational.
This is an on-site position supporting a highly visible, public-facing museum environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day IT support for museum operations, including localized server networks, workstations, networked devices, telecommunications systems, exhibit-related IT infrastructure, and other digital assets.
- Monitor and troubleshoot technical systems supporting interactive exhibits, digital media players, multi-screen displays, touch tables, projection systems, and other technology-dependent visitor experiences.
- Respond to technical incidents and service requests in accordance with required service levels, including beginning diagnostic troubleshooting within one hour and supporting rapid resolution of critical outages.
- Perform preventative maintenance, system checks, software updates, device status reviews, backup verification, network connectivity checks, and other operational readiness activities.
- Troubleshoot hardware, software, network connectivity, media playback, peripheral devices, user access, and system availability issues.
- Document incidents, troubleshooting steps, corrective actions, recurring issues, outage duration, escalation actions, and final resolutions.
- Coordinate with the Program Manager, AV Media Specialists, museum staff, facility personnel, security representatives, vendors, and Government points of contact to resolve technical issues.
- Provide technical support for public programs, educational activities, special events, ceremonies, ship commissionings, and other museum activities.
- Support inventory tracking, equipment inspections, asset identification, warranty/vendor coordination, and replacement recommendations for IT systems and components.
- Maintain awareness of cybersecurity, access-control, user-account, equipment-accountability, and Government facility requirements.
- Identify risks to system availability and visitor-facing technology and recommend corrective actions or escalation when necessary.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Three (3) to six (6) years of systems administration or technical support experience.
- Industry-standard certifications, including CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+. Cloud certifications (AWS/Azure) or Google Workspace Administration are highly valued.
- Proficiency in managing both Windows and macOS environments.
- Hands-on experience with VLANs, VPNs, and robust Wi-Fi mesh networks capable of handling hundreds of concurrent museum guests.
- Knowledge of threat mitigation, firewalls, and data encryption to protect sensitive data and intellectual property.
- Experience managing cloud storage and SaaS platforms used for museum operations.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair a wide range of hardware, from workstations and gallery projectors to theater systems.
- Experience providing IT support, systems administration, network support, help desk support, telecommunications support, digital exhibit support, or similar technical operations support in a public-facing or mission-critical environment.
- Ability to troubleshoot hardware, software, network connectivity, media playback, peripheral devices, user access, and system availability issues using structured diagnostic methods.
- Working knowledge of workstation support, local area networks, servers or server-adjacent systems, audiovisual-connected devices, digital media systems, and basic cybersecurity practices.
- Ability to respond quickly to service requests, prioritize critical outages, communicate technical status clearly, and coordinate resolution across multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to document incidents, maintenance actions, root causes, service impacts, and corrective actions accurately and promptly.
- Ability to support a 363-day-per-year museum operation, including weekends, holidays, special events, surge periods, or emergency call-in support as assigned.
- Successful completion of required orientation, safety training, technical procedures training, facility access requirements, and museum-specific operating procedures.
- Ability to successfully complete a Tier 1 / National Agency Check with Inquiries background investigation for a Public Trust position prior to receiving required credentials or facility access.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting IT systems in a museum, cultural institution, federal facility, visitor center, maritime attraction, public venue, education facility, or other high-availability public environment.
- Experience supporting interactive exhibits, digital signage, media players, projection systems, touch screens, video walls, presentation systems, or networked AV equipment.
- Familiarity with Government facility access, Public Trust environments, cybersecurity awareness, equipment accountability, service desk ticketing, and incident escalation procedures.
- Experience coordinating with vendors, AV technicians, exhibit fabricators, facilities staff, or Government technical representatives to resolve system issues.
- Familiarity with specialized archiving and collection databases.
- Ability to bridge traditional IT and gallery technology, including multi-screen video walls and interactive touch tables.
- Established methodology for data restoration following system failures or cyber incidents.
- Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical personnel and volunteers.
Schedule & Work Environment
This position supports a museum operating 363 days per year. The IT Specialist may be scheduled during core museum operating hours of 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and may be required to support weekends, holidays, special events, ceremonies, ship commissionings, surge periods, and urgent technical incidents.
The position may require walking throughout public galleries, technical spaces, offices, and event areas; working near visitor-facing exhibits; lifting or moving light technical equipment; and responding quickly to operational disruptions affecting digital infrastructure or exhibit functionality.
