Fiber Optic Technician
Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable, motivated, and detail-oriented Fiber Optic Technician to join our telecommunications team. The Fiber Optic Technician will be responsible for installing, maintaining, testing, repairing, and troubleshooting fiber optic cable systems and related network infrastructure in both indoor and outdoor environments.
This position requires strong technical knowledge, hands-on field experience, and the ability to safely work around aerial and underground telecommunications infrastructure. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently, operating specialized tools and equipment, interpreting technical documentation, and completing assigned work in accordance with industry and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot fiber optic cable systems and telecommunications infrastructure.
- Perform fiber optic cable preparation, fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, termination, and connector installation.
- Use optical testing equipment, including optical time-domain reflectometers, optical power meters, visual fault locators, and light sources.
- Test fiber optic networks to verify signal levels, continuity, connectivity, and overall network performance.
- Diagnose fiber faults, damaged cables, excessive signal loss, and other network-related issues.
- Interpret construction prints, network diagrams, schematics, splice documents, engineering drawings, and troubleshooting guides.
- Perform aerial and underground fiber installation activities, including cable pulling, lashing, trenching, conduit installation, and placement of telecommunications lines.
- Access utility poles, ladders, aerial lifts, bucket trucks, handholes, pedestals, cabinets, network interface units, and other telecommunications facilities.
- Safely operate bucket trucks, construction equipment, power tools, hand tools, and specialized fiber optic equipment.
- Install and secure telecommunications cables using approved hardware, clamps, anchors, brackets, and support systems.
- Perform outside plant operations in accordance with project specifications and applicable safety requirements.
- Complete service installations, network repairs, maintenance assignments, and emergency restoration work.
- Accurately document completed work, testing results, signal readings, materials used, and network changes.
- Communicate professionally with supervisors, team members, customers, contractors, and project representatives.
- Maintain company tools, equipment, vehicles, and assigned materials in safe working condition.
- Follow all company safety procedures, traffic-control requirements, fall-protection standards, and National Electrical Safety Code guidelines.
- Assist with additional telecommunications construction, maintenance, and network infrastructure projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Previous experience in telecommunications, fiber optic installation, outside plant construction, field service, electrical work, or a related technical field.
- Experience installing, splicing, testing, maintaining, or troubleshooting fiber optic cable systems.
- Ability to use fusion splicers, optical testing equipment, diagnostic tools, hand tools, and power tools.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, construction prints, schematics, splice diagrams, and electrical wiring diagrams.
- Knowledge of fiber optic network components, cable types, connectors, enclosures, splitters, terminals, and distribution systems.
- Understanding of low-voltage wiring, Ethernet, local area networks, wide area networks, telephony systems, and basic IT infrastructure.
- Experience working outdoors in varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
- Ability to safely climb ladders and utility poles and work from bucket trucks or aerial lifts.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, cables, ladders, and construction materials.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision and effectively collaborate with a field team.
- Ability to maintain accurate documentation and follow established project specifications.
- Commitment to workplace safety, quality workmanship, and customer service.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification or formal training in fiber optic installation, testing, or splicing.
- Experience with aerial and underground outside plant fiber networks.
- Experience operating bucket trucks, aerial lifts, trenchers, cable pullers, or similar construction equipment.
- Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code and telecommunications utility safety requirements.
- Experience with residential, commercial, industrial, or fiber-to-the-home network installations.
- Knowledge of occupational safety standards, fall protection, work-zone safety, and traffic control.
- Commercial driver’s license or equipment operation certification.
- Experience with network mapping, work-order, field-service, or construction-management software.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work in confined or elevated areas.
- Safely lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, wind, and other changing weather conditions.
- Work near roadways, utility poles, construction sites, underground facilities, and active telecommunications equipment.
- Wear required personal protective equipment, including safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, gloves, hard hats, eye protection, and fall-protection equipment.
- Travel between assigned job sites as required.
Work Schedule
The position may require daytime, evening, weekend, on-call, overtime, or emergency restoration work depending on operational and customer needs.
