Nordic Industries, Inc. is seeking a qualified Engineer I to support our project management, estimating, and field operations teams. Nordic Industries is a heavy civil contractor performing projects throughout California and the surrounding states.
This position is intended for an individual who has progressed beyond the entry level Engineer I role and is capable of independently managing assigned project responsibilities with limited supervision while continuing to develop toward greater project management and operational responsibility.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent engineering degree, or related field.
- Minimum of approximately 2 to 5 years of relevant constriction experience preferred
- Heavy civil construction experience strongly preferred
- Experience involving earthwork, underground utilities, levees, water infrastructure, structural concrete, paving, or similar heavy civil construction is beneficial.
- Demonstrate ability and willingness to work effectively in both office and field environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
· Independently review project plans, specifications, contract documents, technical requirements, and shop drawings for conflicts, discrepancies, dimensional issues, constructability concerns, and potential impacts to cost or schedule.
· Coordinate assigned project activities with Project Managers, Superintendents, subcontractors, vendors, consultants, inspectors, and owner representatives.
· Prepare, process, track, and manage submittals, Requests for Information, shop drawings, samples, and other project documentation.
· Identify potential scope changes, differing site conditions, design conflicts, delays, and other issues that may affect project cost, schedule, or contract performance.
· Assist in preparing documentation supporting change orders, requests for equitable adjustment, claims, and other contract-related matters.
· Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and independently evaluate labor, equipment, and material requirements.
· Assist with project estimating, bid preparation, scope development, subcontractor solicitation, supplier quotations, and cost analysis.
· Coordinate procurement of project materials and equipment during both preconstruction and post-award phases.
· Verify materials and equipment comply with approved submittals, contract specifications, drawings, and project requirements.
· Assist in administering project quality-control programs, inspections, testing, documentation, corrective actions, and nonconformance resolution.
· Monitor and evaluate labor, equipment, and construction production rates and provide timely reporting to project management.
· Assist Project Managers with progress billings, quantity verification, cost tracking, forecasting, supporting documentation, and subcontractor payment review.
· Maintain accurate and current project information within company document-control, project-management, and site-management systems.
· Maintain and manage drawing logs, plan sets, specifications, submittal logs, shop drawings, RFI logs, change documentation, and other controlled project records.
· Track project materials, equipment, deliveries, and inventories.
· Attend and actively participate in progress, coordination, safety, quality-control, preconstruction, and owner meetings.
· Assist in developing, updating, and monitoring project schedules, short-interval plans, look-ahead schedules, and milestone tracking.
· Perform field verification, measurements, quantity checks, production tracking, and project documentation.
· Coordinate resolution of field conflicts and technical issues with project management and field supervision.
· Assist in subcontractor and supplier coordination, including scope review, scheduling, material requirements, and performance tracking.
· Support implementation and compliance with Nordic Industries' safety requirements and project-specific safety programs.
· Assist with preparation of project closeout documentation, record drawings, turnover packages, and final contract requirements.
· Provide guidance and support to Engineer I personnel and other junior project staff as assigned.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Strong ability to read, interpret, and apply construction plans, specifications, contract documents, and technical requirements.
· Working knowledge of heavy civil construction methods, sequencing, estimating, scheduling, and project controls.
· Ability to independently identify project risks, conflicts, and potential changes in scope.
· Strong quantity takeoff, cost analysis, and problem-solving skills.
· Experience processing and managing submittals, RFIs, shop drawings, and project logs.
· Working knowledge of project billing, cost tracking, forecasting, and change management.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
· Ability to independently manage multiple assignments and priorities.
· Ability to effectively communicate with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, vendors, consultants, inspectors, and owners.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
· Experience with AGTEK, Trimble, CAD, or similar construction technology is preferred.
· Experience with Primavera P6 is preferred.
· Experience with construction document-control and project-management software is preferred.
Position Development
The Engineer II position represents an intermediate step within Nordic Industries' project management and construction operations career path.
As technical knowledge, project experience, leadership ability, judgment, and responsibility increase, employees may be considered for advancement into positions such as Senior Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, Project Manager, Estimator, or other project management and operational roles within Nordic Industries.
Compensation and Benefits
Base Salary Range: $90,000–$125,000 per year
The salary range shown reflects the range Nordic Industries reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the candidate’s qualifications, education, training, experience, position responsibilities, and other job-related factors.
