Position Summary
We are seeking a genuinely senior tax professional who can independently prepare and review individual and small-business tax returns in ProSeries Professional.
This role requires more than tax return preparation. The right candidate will be able to identify unresolved tax and accounting issues, recognize missing information, review the work of other preparers, communicate directly with clients, and manage assigned engagements with limited supervision.
This is not an entry-level or training-focused tax preparation role. It is best suited for someone with meaningful public accounting or professional tax preparation experience who is comfortable taking ownership of client work from initial review through completion.
The position follows the natural seasonality of the tax profession. Workloads are significantly heavier during tax season and extension season, with reduced hours during slower periods of the year.
This Role May Be a Good Fit If You Can
- Independently prepare and review 1040, 1120S, and 1065 tax returns
- Review returns prepared by other tax professionals and identify technical, accounting, and documentation issues
- Connect business returns, K-1s, shareholder or partner basis, and the related individual returns
- Review bookkeeping records and prepare necessary year-end adjusting entries
- Recognize missing information and hold a return open rather than make unsupported assumptions
- Identify tax planning opportunities during preparation and review
- Communicate directly with clients regarding tax questions, missing information, and next steps
- Work confidently in ProSeries Professional without substantial software training
- Manage multiple engagements while maintaining accuracy, responsiveness, and professionalism
Required Qualifications
- At least five years of recent professional tax preparation experience
- Strong, current proficiency with ProSeries Professional
- Meaningful experience preparing individual and small-business tax returns
- Experience preparing 1040, 1120S, and 1065 returns
- Experience reviewing tax returns prepared by others
- Experience reviewing bookkeeping records and preparing adjusting journal entries
- Ability to independently manage open items, client questions, and assigned deadlines
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment
- Comfort communicating with clients by video call and email
- Availability to work primarily during Eastern Time business hours
- Commitment to accuracy, professionalism, and exceptional client service
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or Enrolled Agent credential
- New York State and New York City tax experience
- Tax planning experience
- Tax notice and resolution experience
- Experience mentoring or training junior preparers
- Experience preparing Form 990 returns
ProSeries Experience
Candidates should have strong, recent experience using ProSeries Professional, including:
- Individual and business return preparation
- Federal and multi-state returns
- K-1 input and review
- Shareholder and partner basis schedules
- Depreciation and fixed asset reporting
- Diagnostics and error resolution
- E-file processing
- Final return review and quality control
Candidates whose experience is primarily limited to basic individual returns, data entry, retail tax preparation, or tax software other than ProSeries are unlikely to be a fit for this role.
ResponsibilitiesTax Preparation and Review
- Prepare and review individual, business, and nonprofit tax returns
- Review client documentation for completeness and accuracy
- Identify missing information, inconsistencies, and unresolved tax or accounting issues
- Review business returns together with the related owner returns
- Review basis schedules, K-1 reporting, depreciation, and state filings
- Identify potential tax planning opportunities
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local tax laws
- Maintain high standards of accuracy, quality, and professionalism
- Document open items and conclusions clearly
Client Communication and Service
- Serve as a point of contact for assigned clients
- Communicate with clients regarding missing information, tax questions, and return status
- Conduct client review meetings when appropriate
- Explain tax results and planning considerations in clear, practical language
- Help clients understand what is needed and what happens next
- Deliver a professional and supportive client experience throughout the engagement
Team Collaboration and Review
- Review work prepared by other members of the tax team
- Assist with training and mentoring junior preparers
- Support internal quality-control and review procedures
- Collaborate with team members to meet deadlines and client expectations
- Contribute ideas for improving workflows, processes, and client service
- Assist with extension season and year-round tax projects as needed
Work Schedule
This is a fully remote position with a seasonal workload.
- January through April: Heavier workload during peak tax season
- September through October: Increased workload during extension season
- May through August and November through December: Reduced hours based on firm needs and workload
Expected hours generally range from 15 to 40 hours per week depending on the season.
The position is expected to begin with part-time, year-round work and heavier hours during tax and extension seasons. For the right person, the role may grow into a larger and more consistent position as the firm expands.
Compensation
$40 to $60 per hour, based on experience.
Compensation within the range will depend on demonstrated ProSeries proficiency, return-review ability, business-return experience, technical depth, and the ability to independently manage client work.
