Job Summary
The Town of Hadley is seeking a dependable and hardworking Laborer/Truck Driver to join its Department of Public Works – Highway Division. This position performs a wide variety of skilled and unskilled labor in support of the construction, maintenance, and repair of the Town's roads, sidewalks, drainage systems, public grounds, and other municipal infrastructure. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining trucks, heavy equipment, and hand and power tools; performing roadway maintenance, pothole repair, sign installation, tree trimming, catch basin cleaning, and grounds maintenance; participating in the Town's snow and ice control operations; and responding to emergency situations as needed. The ideal candidate is safety-conscious, mechanically inclined, enjoys working outdoors in all weather conditions, and is committed to providing high-quality public service. Candidates must possess a valid Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake Certification and Tanker Endorsement, applicable hoisting licenses, and the ability to perform physically demanding work as part of a collaborative public works team.
Job Responsibilities
Operates and maintains department equipment, trucks and hand tools used in the completion of a wide range of public works projects such as maintaining streets, sidewalks, setting curbing, laying down asphalt or concrete, ground maintenance, and cold patching potholes etc.
Performs physical, manual labor using department equipment including but not limited to hand and power tools to dig ditches and trenches, repair and clean catch basins, paint stop signs and cross walks, trim trees, chip brush, install street signs, patch roadways, and perform public works related tasks around gas pipes, trees, wires, cars, personal property and fellow workers.
Required to perform routine maintenance of Town equipment.
Required to participate in the Town’s ice and snow plowing/sanding program.
Attends training sessions as required to maintain awareness and knowledge of updates or changes in occupational safety requirements pertaining to the use of department equipment and tools.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Must have a High School diploma or equivalent and one to three (1-3) years prior work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Special Requirements:Must possess a valid OSHA 10, Massachusetts Class B Operator's License (CDL) with Air Brake Certification and Tanker Endorsement; Hoister's License 2B, 4G any other licenses/endorsements required by state or federal law.Must successfully complete a physical examination and participate in the Town’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program as a condition of employment
