JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Non-Ferrous Foreman, the Non-Ferrous Metal Sorter is an entry-level, hands-on role that plays a critical part in the daily operations of the non-ferrous yard. This position is responsible for assisting customers, accurately sorting and processing non-ferrous materials, and supporting safe, efficient yard operations. The Sorter ensures materials are properly received, graded, stored, and prepared for shipment while maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations & Material Handling
- Provide prompt, professional assistance to non-ferrous material suppliers.
- Provide courteous and professional customer service to all suppliers and visitors to the yard.
- Sort, classify, and prepare non-ferrous materials for storage or shipment.
- Load and unload materials and stack items such as rims as required.
- Support efficient yard operations through accurate handling and movement of materials.
Systems & Documentation
- Utilize RIMAS (Recycling Industry Management & Accounting System) for purchases and sales.
- Scan purchases and sales, record deductions, and review commodity types for accuracy.
- Assist in maintaining accurate records of incoming and outgoing materials.
Safety & Yard Maintenance
- Follow all company safety procedures, policies, and regulations at all times.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free yard by clearing debris and identifying unsafe conditions.
- Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Communicate safety concerns and equipment repair needs to the Non-Ferrous Foreman.
Equipment Operation
- Operate non-ferrous yard equipment including forklifts, skid steers, alligator shear, and wire strippers (training provided if needed).
- Perform basic equipment checks and report issues promptly.
Administrative & Other Duties
- Attend all required training sessions and meetings.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support yard operations.
SCHEDULE & WORK CONDITIONS
- Regular schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Hours may vary between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, based on operational needs.
- Must be willing to work extended hours and varying shifts as needed.
- Position is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, dust, and mud.
- Work is performed in a physically demanding, industrial environment that may be dusty, dirty, and noisy.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS
- Strong commitment to safety, reliability, and attendance.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail, especially in identifying and sorting different metal types (or willingness to learn).
- Ability to accurately identify, sort, and grade non-ferrous metals (training provided).
- Previous experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or recycling environment preferred but not required.
- Experience operating forklifts, shears, or similar equipment preferred; training provided for the right candidate.
- Basic mechanical aptitude is helpful.
- Basic familiarity with computers or Microsoft applications is a plus.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
PHYSICAL & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, twist, and perform physical labor for extended periods.
- Ability to work in moderate to loud environments and outdoor conditions year-round.
- Must wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, gloves, hearing protection, and safety-toed boots.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
