Job Description
Alexanders Mechanical Solutions is seeking a Mechanical Engineer who enjoys turning concepts into manufactured products. This hands-on position works closely with our fabrication and machine shop teams to design parts and assemblies, develop manufacturing drawings, estimate projects, and support production from initial concept through final inspection. The ideal candidate enjoys solving practical engineering problems and working directly with skilled machinists and fabricators.
Primary Responsibilities
Manufacturing Drawings
- Create detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks, Fusion 360, AutoCAD, or similar CAD software.
- Develop fabrication, machining, and assembly drawings that support efficient production.
Manufacturing Support
- Generate bills of materials (BOMs), material lists, and cut lists.
- Create nested programs for CNC plasma cutting equipment.
- Collaborate with machinists, welders, and fabricators to resolve design and manufacturing issues.
Estimating & Purchasing
- Assist in preparing project estimates by obtaining vendor quotes.
- Create purchase requests for raw materials and outsourced services.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Inspect completed components to verify conformance with drawings.
- Recommend design improvements that reduce manufacturing time, material waste, and production costs.
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation and revision control.
Requirements
Understanding of Mechanics - A strong mechanical aptitude is a must. An industry knowledge of tools and machinery, including CNC lathes, mills, plasma cutters, press brakes, and welding equipment is key.
CAD Draftsmanship- Candidates must have the ability to transcend project ideas from a concept to a complete actionable set of drawings. Proficiency in SolidWorks (or similar software programs) is required.
Dimensional Inspection - Ability to accurately measure and inspect parts using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges to derive dimensional specifications from existing parts for reproduction, as well as perform quality inspections on finished products.
Data Recordkeeping- Emphasis is placed on recording data and other relevant information in a way that can be referenced and utilized by others. Strong organizational skills are required.
Multitasking Skills - Multiple tasks are performed and accomplished on a daily basis.
Interpersonal Skills - The ability to clearly convey information is key; active participation in discussions to make changes and adjustments throughout the quoting and manufacturing phases is important.
Creativity and Problem-Solving Skills- Creative skills and problem-solving abilities are must-haves.
Education- Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology degree preferred; at a minimum, applicants must have an Associate Degree in engineering, precision machining technology or extensive relevant experience.
