Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Carpenter to join our millwork and casework fabrication team, bringing expertise in various facets of fabrication to join our production team. You will build high-end architectural woodwork, custom cabinetry, and commercial casework. Experience and attention to detail will ensure that each project is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.
Responsibilities
- Measures, marks, cuts, machines, drills, routs, sands, assembles, and fits materials using appropriate tools and equipment.
- Performs cabinet and casework construction, including carcass assembly, face frames, doors, drawers, shelving, panels, and related components.
- Performs countertop fabrication, including cutting, edge fabrication, seam preparation, backsplash fabrication, finishing, and related work as required.
- Performs fitting, trimming, sanding, routing, and other detail work necessary to achieve specified dimensions and finish requirements.
- Works with a variety of materials, including plywood, MDF, hardwoods, veneers, plastic laminates, solid-surface materials, and other materials commonly used in architectural fabrication.
- Installs and adjusts cabinet hardware, hinges, drawer slides, fasteners, and other components.
- Performs repairs, modifications, and adjustments to fabricated components as required.
- Assists with field installation, final fitting, adjustment, and completion of fabricated components when assigned.
- Drawings, Measurements, and Specifications
- Reads and interprets shop drawings, architectural drawings, elevations, details, cut lists, specifications, and other project documentation.
- Verifies dimensions, material requirements, and component details prior to fabrication.
- Uses accurate measurements and calculations to establish cutting and assembly dimensions.
- Maintains required tolerances and dimensions throughout the fabrication process.
- Identifies discrepancies, omissions, or potential fabrication issues and communicates them to the appropriate supervisor before proceeding.
- Verifies completed work against drawings and specifications to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Equipment and Tools
- Operates woodworking and fabrication equipment, including but not limited to table saws, panel saws, routers, sanders, drills, edgebanders, and other shop machinery.
- Uses hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, and specialty fabrication equipment appropriate to assigned work.
- Performs routine inspection and basic maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Uses tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and company safety procedures.
- Reports damaged, defective, or unsafe tools and equipment to the appropriate supervisor.
Quality Assurance and Control
- Inspects materials and fabricated components throughout the production process.
- Verifies dimensions, fit, finish, appearance, and workmanship prior to advancing work to the next stage of production.
- Identifies and corrects fabrication errors when within the scope of the position and reports issues requiring supervisory direction.
- Ensures completed work meets established company quality standards and project specifications.
- Takes appropriate measures to prevent damage to finished components during fabrication, handling, staging, transportation, and installation.
Material Handling and Production
- Safely handles, moves, stages, and stores raw materials, work-in-process components, and finished products.
- Assists with loading and unloading materials and fabricated components as required.
- Maintains organized material storage and work areas.
- Follows production schedules and established work priorities.
- Completes assigned work within established production requirements while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Communicates production concerns, material shortages, damaged materials, and other issues that may affect schedule or quality.
Safety and Housekeeping
- Complies with all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable OSHA requirements.
- Uses required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Properly operates machine guards, dust collection systems, and other safety equipment.
- Reports workplace injuries, incidents, unsafe conditions, and damaged equipment promptly.
- Follows established procedures for the safe handling of adhesives, chemicals, finishing products, and other materials.
- Participates in required safety training and meetings.
- Maintains awareness of coworkers and surrounding activities while operating machinery and handling materials.
Teamwork and Communication
- Works cooperatively with production personnel, supervisors, project managers, installers, and other employees.
- Communicates clearly regarding project requirements, production issues, material needs, and quality concerns.
- Accepts direction and feedback from supervisors.
- Provides assistance to other employees when assigned or when required to complete production activities.
- Performs other duties within the scope of the position as assigned by management.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of general carpentry, woodworking, cabinetry, millwork, and fabrication practices.
- Knowledge of cabinet construction and assembly methods.
- Knowledge of common millwork and casework materials and applications.
- Working knowledge of countertop fabrication methods and materials.
- Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and detailed fabrication plans.
- Ability to accurately measure and calculate dimensions, including fractions.
- Ability to understand dimensional tolerances and maintain required accuracy.
- Ability to visualize finished components and understand how individual components are assembled.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, woodworking machinery, and fabrication equipment.
- Ability to recognize defects, inconsistencies, and quality issues in materials and finished work.
- Ability to work independently and follow established instructions and procedures.
- Ability to prioritize assigned work and meet production requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
- Ability to maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Ability to follow established safety procedures and use required PPE.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in carpentry, cabinetmaking, millwork, casework, countertop fabrication, woodworking, or a related trade preferred.
- [Two (2)] years of relevant experience preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to safely operate common woodworking and fabrication tools and equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to read and work from measurements, drawings, and specifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in architectural millwork or commercial casework fabrication.
- Experience with plastic laminate and veneer fabrication.
- Experience with solid-surface countertop fabrication.
- Experience with custom cabinetry.
- Experience with CNC equipment or other automated fabrication equipment.
- Experience with field installation of millwork, casework, cabinetry, or countertops.
- Formal vocational, technical, apprenticeship, or trade training in carpentry, woodworking, cabinetmaking, or a related field.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently use hands and fingers for grasping, handling, cutting, sanding, drilling, routing, assembly, and operation of tools and equipment.
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and work in various positions.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and finished components.
- Ability to safely handle large, bulky, and awkwardly shaped materials.
- Ability to lift and carry up to [50] pounds independently and heavier materials with assistance or mechanical equipment as appropriate.
- Ability to work from floor level, elevated work surfaces, and other positions as required by the work being performed.
- Ability to maintain visual concentration for detailed measuring, cutting, assembly, and finishing work.
- Ability to hear and respond to equipment sounds, alarms, verbal instructions, and other workplace conditions.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, respiratory protection, and other protective equipment as required.
Work Environment
The primary work environment is an indoor fabrication and manufacturing facility. The position may also require work at customer or project job sites for field measurements, installation, service, adjustment, or completion of fabricated components.
The employee may be exposed to:
- Wood and other airborne dust.
- Noise generated by woodworking machinery and power tools.
- Adhesives, solvents, and other fabrication-related chemicals.
