Position Type: Substitute
Work Schedule: As needed; hours determined by assignment
Reports To: Building Principal; The substitute teacher also works under the direction provided by the regular classroom teacher through lesson plans, schedules, and other instructions.
JOB SUMMARY
The substitute teacher provides classroom instruction and student supervision in the regular teacher's absence. The substitute follows the teacher’s lesson plans, maintains established classroom routines, supports student learning, and provides a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties may vary by assignment and student needs and may include, but are not limited to:
Instruction and Student Support

Follow the lesson plans, schedules, and instructions provided by the regular classroom teacher.

Present assigned lessons and activities to individuals, small groups, or the whole class.

Assist students in locating instructional materials, understanding directions, and completing assigned work.

Maintain appropriate academic and behavioral expectations.

Keep students actively engaged in assigned learning activities.

Consult with the building principal or designated staff member before making significant changes to the teacher’s plans.

Use only instructional materials, technology, and equipment authorized for the assignment.
Classroom Management and Supervision

Maintain established classroom routines and school procedures as closely as possible.

Provide appropriate supervision of students in the classroom and during recess, lunch, passing periods, assemblies, emergency drills, field trips, and other assigned activities.

Perform the regular teacher’s assigned supervisory duties unless directed otherwise by the building principal.

Address routine student behavior using established classroom and school procedures.

Report any serious or ongoing behavioral concerns to the building principal or a designated staff member.

Take reasonable precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Seek assistance immediately when an emergency, safety concern, or serious student issue arises.
Professional Responsibilities

Report to the school office upon arrival and follow check-in and check-out procedures.

Become familiar with and use the District’s absence-management system to review and accept available substitute assignments.

Maintain the confidentiality of student, staff, and District information.

Follow District policies, school rules, safety procedures, and the established chain of command.

Communicate and interact with students, employees, families, and members of the public in a professional and respectful manner.

Represent Payette School District in a positive and professional manner.

Leave a written or electronic report for the regular teacher summarizing completed activities, student concerns, schedule changes, and other relevant information.

Leave the classroom in an orderly manner and return supplies and equipment to their designated locations.

Log out of computers and turn off classroom equipment as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent required

Previous experience working with children or in a school setting preferred

Ability to follow lesson plans and provide instructional support

Ability to maintain a safe, positive, and orderly learning environment

Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, and the public

Dependable, flexible, and able to adapt to different classrooms, grade levels, and assignments

Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
-
Ability to use basic classroom technology and the District’s absence-management system

Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate professional judgment
Compensation
The substitute rate is $120 per full day and $60 per half day.
Substitutes are temporary, at-will employees and are paid only for assignments worked. Substitute assignments are based on District need and are not guaranteed.
Background Check
A required criminal history check and fingerprinting must be completed before employment. Applicants must provide the identification and documentation required by the District and the Idaho State Department of Education.
Fingerprinting is conducted at the District Office by appointment only. Applicants are responsible for applicable background-check fees unless otherwise notified by the District.
All employment recommendations are tentative and contingent upon:

Payette School District Board of Trustees’ approval;

Successful completion of all required criminal history and background checks;

Submission of required employment documentation; and
-
Successful completion of any other pre-employment screening required for the position.
An applicant who has been convicted of a disqualifying offense under Idaho Code § 33-1208 may be ineligible for employment.
Terms of Employment/Legal References
This position is considered at-will employment. Nothing in this job description creates a contract, a guarantee of continued employment, a property right, or a guarantee of a minimum number of assignments. Either the employee or the District may end the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause or notice, subject to applicable law.
