Work Schedule: 40 hours a week, Monday - Friday

SUMMARY
The Paraprofessional III is employed by John Muir Charter Schools and is responsible for supporting classroom instruction and increasing one-on-one learning opportunities of youth participating in the CSET/Sequoia Corps program in Visalia, Ca. CSET and JMCS’s innovative education programs are designed to provide youth, ages 16-25, with an engaging educational experience that meets individual needs. We combine direct instruction, project work, credit recovery, life skills, vocational training, and other academic experiences into a highly personalized high school classroom. These classroom activities are combined with top notch vocational training provided by CSET/Sequoia Conservation Corps.

About CSET/Sequoia Conservation Corps
The Sequoia Community Corps (SCC) offers vocational training in the trades of weatherization, urban forestry, conservation education, and recycling, including the recycling of CRV beverage containers, e-waste, used oil, and waste tires. SCC has successfully operated in Tulare and Kings Counties for the past 34 years, providing more than 4,000 young adults with valuable job training and educational opportunities.
In addition to the services offered to young adults, the SCC also assists local governments, agencies and businesses meet critical community needs such as park development, recycling services, and natural resource conservation in local recreation areas.
This position includes the following duties:
- Support classroom instruction of young adults between the ages of 18 and 26, most of whom have had significant breaks in their high school education
- Substitute in the classroom when the lead instructor is not present
- Instruct students one-on-one and in small groups in basic Math and English
- Work one-on-one with students during credit recovery
- Work with the Teacher and Special Education Teacher to Monitor IEP progress and outcomes
- Support staff with grading and maintaining gradebooks
- Work closely with the JMCS and CSET team to integrate each program component into the classroom
- Support graduation requirements and successful completion for students
- Supervise students when the instructor is not present
- Maintain rigorous classroom behavior and academic standards
- Assist with record keeping (attendance, subject attendance)
- Assist with career pathway activities and continuing education assistance, including helping students with resumes, college and job applications, job skills training, scholarships
- Assist with administering required student testing
- Assist in maintenance of Student Achievement Plans
- Maintain confidentiality of information regarding students
- Other filing and copying as needed
- Other duties may be assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or minimum of four years of college
- Possess or ability to obtain a 30-day substitute credential
- Ability to tutor Math, English and general high school subjects with minimal supervision
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work and communicate effectively as a part of a team
- Ability to motivate, encourage, and support young adults from a wide variety of social, educational and economic backgrounds
- Ability to build relationships with education providers
- Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills (conflict resolution, counseling, coaching)
- Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff
- Computer literacy (Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and diplomacy on the job
- Ability to work effectively with minimum supervision and manage competing priorities
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in making effective decisions and in problem solving skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as an instructional assistant, paraeducator, or tutor in a secondary school setting
- Demonstrated ability to tutor Math and English Language Arts

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is required to walk, use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Perform simple grasping and fine manipulation. There are normal office working conditions and associated physical demands. For example, on a continuous basis, sit at a desk using a computer and in meetings for long periods of time. Intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding the desk, as well as, repetitive finger movements with office and computer machinery. May be expected to lift and move containers weighing up to 40 lbs.
Benefits and Compensation: $31.22 (Step 1) - Step 30+ at $52.34 (Step 11), DOE. Maximum for initial placement (step 11) $39.96 per hour. Full medical, dental and vision benefits offered. Employer-paid life insurance. This is a full-time position with a 200-day work year. Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. This position qualifies for PERS enrollment.
