POSITION OVERVIEW

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs daily scheduled shift(s) at the service desk, provides backup assistance according to departmental needs, and opens the library building on Sundays. Monitors the library's monograph collection and ensures the items are properly shelved in the collection in a timely manner. Initiates and coordinates efforts of weeding and shifting the collection in order to accommodate new books purchased and overall collection growth planning. Ensures that special projects are implemented and completed. Maintains and annually updates a position policy and procedure manual for this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A high school diploma and two years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

General library knowledge, including familiarity with library procedures and policies; working knowledge of the library's integrated library system and Microsoft Office applications; and strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Some college coursework is preferred. Two years of library experience, preferably in an academic library, including experience with library shelving and maintaining materials in proper classification order, is preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES:

50% - Monitors collections; ensures items are re-shelved in a timely manner; prepares items for withdrawal; integrates new items into the collection. Helps plan, oversee, and perform collection maintenance projects which include, but are not limited to, weeding, shifting, surveying, shelf reading, and other collection maintenance projects. Recommends policies/procedures to enhance stacks conditions and maintenance. Provides expertise in logistics and leads student employees for execution of these projects. - (Essential)
30% - Performs circulation desk and course reserves desk duties (including, but not limited to, circulating items, supervising desk student(s), dealing with circulation problems, assisting patrons with locating course reserves, receiving packages, and retrieving items from remote book drops). Opens the library on Sundays overseeing all circulation and library activity during this time (including, but not limited to, dealing with building maintenance issues and/or building/patron security issues), occasionally closes the library if needed, and works rotating Saturdays. This position also serves as one of two primary openers for the library. - (Essential)
15% - Collects detailed measurements of the collections to inform Reference librarians, the Circulation Department, and Library administration regarding use, growth, turnaround times, and accuracy of stacks maintenance work. Works closely with supervisor and subject librarians to plan and implement collection management projects. Provides expertise in logistics and leads student employees for execution of these projects. - (Essential)
