The AV Systems Design Engineer will serve as a key technical contributor in a pre-sales engineering environment, supporting proposals, competitive bids, task orders, and awarded projects. The engineer will take customer requirements from initial discovery through functional design, equipment selection, pricing support, and engineering documentation. The successful candidate must be capable of independently developing functional requirements documents, engineering drawings, equipment lists, bills of materials, and pricing inputs while coordinating technical decisions with the Principal Engineer.
- Develop conceptual and detailed audiovisual system designs from customer requirements, statements of work, site information, drawings, and technical discovery meetings.
- Develop Functional Requirements Documents (FRDs), Basis of Design narratives, technical narratives, and other proposal engineering documentation that clearly defines intended system functionality and capabilities.
- Produce pre-sales and proposal engineering drawings including system block diagrams, signal-flow drawings, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, equipment elevations, rack elevations, wall elevations, connection details, and other design documentation required to communicate the proposed solution.
- Must be proficient in Stardraw Design 7.4 and Microsoft Visio for AV engineering drawings and documentation; working experience with AutoCAD is required.
- Develop accurate equipment lists and Bills of Materials (BOMs), including manufacturers, model/part numbers, quantities, accessories, infrastructure requirements, and supporting materials.
- Support equipment costing and proposal pricing by obtaining or validating equipment pricing, identifying required accessories and ancillary materials, and coordinating pricing inputs with sales, procurement, and proposal personnel.
- Evaluate product compatibility, technical compliance, TAA or other customer-specific requirements when applicable, lifecycle status, and availability when selecting AV equipment.
- Design complete AV solutions including audio, video, control, collaboration/VTC, AV-over-IP, DSP, networked AV, displays, projection, microphones, loudspeakers, cameras, and related infrastructure.
- Review customer drawings, floor plans, specifications, PWS/SOW requirements, RFQs/RFPs, and other solicitation documents to identify technical requirements, assumptions, risks, gaps, and questions requiring clarification.
- Participate in pre-sales design reviews and collaborate with the Principal Engineer to validate system architecture, design approach, equipment selection, and technical compliance before proposal submission or release for construction.
- Perform occasional travel to customer locations to conduct on-site surveys, document existing conditions, take field measurements, verify infrastructure, capture equipment information, and gather technical requirements necessary to complete the design.
- Develop site-survey reports, photographs/field notes, existing-condition documentation, and follow-up engineering recommendations following site visits.
- Coordinate with Project Managers, installation teams, programmers, procurement personnel, and sales/proposal teams to ensure proposed designs are constructible, supportable, competitively priced, and aligned with scope.
- Transition successful pre-sales designs into awarded-project engineering packages and refine drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation as required for implementation.
- Create and maintain accurate design documentation, shop drawings, submittal packages, and final as-built documentation as assigned.
- Provide remote and occasional on-site technical support during installation, integration, testing, and commissioning to resolve design-related issues.
- Ensure designs follow applicable AVIXA best practices, manufacturer requirements, codes, accessibility requirements, customer security requirements, and project-specific standards.
Successful candidates will have substantial progressive experience in commercial and/or government AV system design and integration, with demonstrated ability to develop complete pre-sales engineering packages that can be priced, proposed, and transitioned into executable project designs. Strong familiarity with AVIXA standards, AV networking/AV-over-IP, modern collaboration platforms, and current AV technologies is required. Experience supporting government or other structured proposal environments is highly desirable. AVIXA CTS or CTS-D certification is preferred.
