Position Summary
The Director, Environmental Health, Safety & Security Operations (EHSSO) provides enterprise leadership for safety strategy, regulatory compliance, physical security, emergency preparedness, and risk mitigation across all operations, including production, transportation, and support functions. This role is responsible for building a proactive, behavior-based safety and security culture, reducing workplace incidents and security risks, protecting people and assets, and aligning safety and security initiatives with operational excellence.
The Director partners closely with Operations leadership while maintaining strong collaboration with HR for compliance, workers’ compensation, employee relations, workplace investigations, and security integration.
Key Responsibilities
1. Enterprise Safety & Security Strategy and Culture
- Develop and execute a comprehensive EHS and physical security strategy aligned with business growth and operational goals.
- Lead transformation to a behavior-based safety and security culture focused on prevention, awareness, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Establish leading and lagging safety and security indicators and drive accountability at all levels.
- Serve as executive sponsor for safety and security culture initiatives across all facilities.
2. Regulatory Compliance, Security & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Serve as primary liaison with regulatory agencies and external auditors for matters within the role’s scope.
- Lead enterprise safety and physical security risk assessments and mitigation planning.
- Standardize safety and security policies, procedures, post orders, audit processes, and minimum controls across sites.
- Oversee physical access-control, visitor-management, credentialing, perimeter-security, surveillance, and security-vendor standards in coordination with Operations, HR, IT, and Facilities.
- Coordinate with IT on physical security technology and incident response while maintaining clear separation from cybersecurity ownership.
3. Incident Prevention, Investigation & Analytics
- Oversee safety and security incident investigation processes with emphasis on root cause, behavioral drivers, and control effectiveness.
- Analyze trends and deploy corrective and preventive actions.
- Implement data-driven safety and security reporting dashboards and KPIs.
- Partner with HR and workers’ compensation leadership on injury management and claim-reduction strategies.
- Coordinate workplace-security investigations with HR, Legal, Operations, and law enforcement, as appropriate, while preserving confidentiality and evidence.
4. Safety Operations & Field Execution
- Lead and develop a multi-site safety team, including Plant Safety, Transportation Safety, and Specialists.
- Ensure consistent execution of safety programs across all facilities and Transportation.
- Conduct regular site visits, audits, and leadership safety reviews.
- Align safety practices with production realities, including 24/7 operations.
5. Enterprise Security & Emergency Preparedness
- Provide enterprise leadership for physical security, workplace violence prevention, threat assessment, and protection of employees, visitors, facilities, products, and other assets.
- Establish and maintain security response protocols, escalation requirements, and after-action review practices.
- Lead emergency preparedness, crisis-management, and business-continuity coordination for events within the role’s scope, including drills and readiness assessments.
- Oversee contracted security services and monitor service levels, staffing plans, training, and performance against established requirements.
- Maintain effective relationships with local emergency services and law-enforcement partners.
6. Training & Leadership Enablement
- Partner with T&OD (Training & Leadership Development) to embed safety and security into onboarding and leadership training.
- Develop supervisor capability in hazard recognition, security awareness, de-escalation, coaching, and accountability.
- Ensure all required certifications and safety and security training programs are maintained and effective.
7. Cross-Functional Integration
- Partner with Operations as the primary alignment point for execution.
- Partner with HR, including LOA/WC and the HRBP team, for injury management, workplace investigations, employee relations, and compliance.
- Partner with IT and Facilities on security systems, access controls, infrastructure, and incident coordination.
- Partner with Total Rewards on cost containment, including claims and insurance impact.
- Support enterprise initiatives such as automation, new-facility design, process changes, and capital projects by incorporating safety and physical security requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental Health, Security Management, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
- 8–12+ years of progressive EHS leadership experience; multi-site manufacturing experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience leading physical security, emergency preparedness, loss-prevention, or workplace-security programs in an operational environment.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) strongly preferred; relevant security or emergency-management certification is a plus.
- Experience in food manufacturing, poultry, or a similar high-risk environment preferred.
- Demonstrated success driving culture change, incident reduction, and risk mitigation.
