Location: Camp Lenox — Otis, Massachusetts
Compensation: $55,000, based on experience + Medical Insurance
Schedule: Six-day work week during the 7-week active camp season; five-day work week in the off-season. For the right long-term fit, Camp Lenox may be able to offer additional value in future seasons by including camper tuition benefits for eligible family members.
Camp Lenox is looking for a skilled, hands-on Carpenter / Assistant Director of Maintenance to support our Director of Maintenance to keep a large residential summer camp running safely and smoothly.
This is not a typical 9-to-5 maintenance job. During the active camp season, Camp Lenox operates more like a small town than a typical workplace, with hundreds of children and staff living on-site. When something breaks, leaks, jams, comes loose, or becomes unsafe, it needs to be handled quickly and practically.
We are looking for someone who takes pride in physical work, can solve problems without constant direction, and understands that the job is to keep camp running safely and smoothly. This role is best suited for someone who is hands-on, reliable, and enjoys being active.
We are specifically looking for someone with solid carpentry and building maintenance skills. A strong candidate is comfortable framing out a small structure, repairing cabin elements, fixing doors and railings, reinforcing bunk beds, handling basic plumbing issues, and doing light electrical work safely and responsibly.
Key responsibilities include:
- Support the Director of Maintenance with daily maintenance operations
- Perform carpentry repairs around camper cabins, staff housing, bathrooms, and program buildings
- Frame, repair, reinforce, or modify small wooden structures
- Repair doors, steps, railings, shelves, cubbies, trim, bunk beds, screens, decks, and other camp structures
- Build simple wooden items or small camp structures as needed
- Help diagnose and repair minor plumbing issues
- Handle light electrical work such as fixtures, switches, outlets, and basic troubleshooting when appropriate
- Install hardware, hooks, latches, handles, shelving, and other fixtures
- Identify unsafe or poorly built items and make durable, practical repairs
- Assist with painting, scraping, screen repair, groundskeeping, and general property maintenance when needed
- Respond to maintenance requests from camp leadership and department heads
- Help prioritize urgent safety issues and time-sensitive repairs
- Keep tools, supplies, and work areas organized
- Maintain a safe, clean, and professional work environment
- Be willing to jump in wherever needed during a busy camp day
Ideal candidate:
- Has strong carpentry, construction, handyman, or building maintenance experience
- Can measure, cut, frame, fasten, reinforce, and repair wooden structures
- Is comfortable using power tools and hand tools safely
- Is not afraid to work on basic plumbing problems
- Can handle light electrical work safely and responsibly
- Has the practical ability to build or repair a small cabin, shed, deck, or similar structure
- Can troubleshoot problems and work independently once given direction
- Has good judgment about safety, durability, and when a job needs extra help
- Is physically able to lift, carry, move furniture/equipment, and work outdoors
- Is dependable, punctual, and calm under pressure
- Has a team-first attitude and understands that camp requires flexibility
- Communicates clearly with supervisors and other staff
- Takes pride in doing quality work without needing to be micromanaged
- Is interested in building a long-term relationship with Camp Lenox
Preferred but not required:
- Framing or small construction project experience
- Experience with cabins, camps, schools, resorts, farms, facilities, or large properties
- Basic plumbing experience
- Basic electrical experience
- Painting and screen repair experience
- Landscaping or groundskeeping experience
- Valid driver’s license
