Position Summary:
The Northwestern Academy of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a passionate and innovative Middle School Mathematics Teacher to inspire students in grades 6-8 through a dynamic, student-centered, arts-integrated learning environment. The ideal candidate will design engaging lessons that connect core math concepts to artistic expression across theatre, dance, music, visual arts, and media. This role emphasizes inquiry-based learning and hands-on exploration, empowering students to investigate real-world math concepts while fostering creativity, critical thinking, cultural awareness, self-expression, and collaboration. By integrating math with language arts, science, social studies, and technology, this teacher will guide students in exploring complex themes, using the arts as a powerful vehicle for both learning and self-expression. Through this interdisciplinary and arts-integrated approach, students will engage in meaningful, real-world experiences that enhance academic achievement, promote critical thinking, and deepen cultural awareness. In this position, the teacher will create a flexible, student-centered classroom where students select a major and minor arts discipline to engage with academic content, ensuring that individual learning needs are met through thoughtful modifications and differentiated instruction. Arts-Integrated Mathematics Instruction: Develop foundational math skills by connecting mathematical concepts with artistic disciplines. Through arts-integrated lessons and hands-on learning, students will explore math topics—such as patterns, geometry, fractions, and ratios—within creative arts disciplines to promote analytical thinking, cultural awareness, and creative expression.

Grade-Level Focus: In grades 6-8, students will deepen their understanding of foundational to advanced math concepts—including patterns, ratios, geometry, symmetry, and proportions by utilizing mathematical reasoning to apply to build structure and aesthetic appeal in creative projects, and encouraging students to see real-world applications of math while fostering critical thinking, creativity, and appreciation for the interconnectedness of these disciplines.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field. Master's degree in Mathematics Education or a related field preferred.

Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Mathematics (EQ or EX) endorsement, or ability to obtain certification

Familiarity with Michigan Mathematic and Arts Standards

Prior experience in a student-centered, arts-integration, or project-based learning environment

Experience in arts-based teaching or as a practicing artist

Experience in teaching middle school students in an urban setting
